Cuernavaca is situated about 85 km. (50 miles) south of Mexico City on the M-95 highway and is truly in the heart of Mexico, and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful and culturally rich regions of the country. Cuernavaca is the capital city of the state of Morelos in Mexico. It is the municipal seat of the municipality of Cuernavaca

Start by trying their excellent harvests of local purple beans, lima beans, garbanzo beans and eggplant. You have to try the pambazos which are buns with potato filling or the quesadilla with different kinds of fillings like rajas con queso, tinga de pollo, cesos de cuitlacoche.
 

Tourist   Office

Cuernavaca's State Tourist Office is at Av. Morelos Sur 187, between Jalisco and Tabasco (tel. 777/314-3881; tel./fax 777/314-3872 or 777/314-3920; www.morelostravel.com), half a block north of the Estrella de Oro bus station and about a 15- to 20-minute walk south of the cathedral. It's open Monday through Friday from 8am to 5pm. There's also a City Tourism kiosk (tel. 777/318-7561 or 777/318-6498), on Morelos beside the El Calvario Church. It's open daily from 8am to 5pm.

Cuernavaca City Highlights

Borda Gardens
These magnificent gardens were designed in the 18th century by a wealthy miner, José de la Borda, and were enjoyed by Maximilian and Carlota for splendid parties during their reign some 100 years later. Visitors can enjoy the different national and international expositions of important artists from all over the world. Open daily

Palace of Cortes
This fascinating palace located near the Zócalo was built in 1530 by Cortés as his personal summer residence. The palace now houses the Historical Museum of Cuernavaca. On February 4th, 1974 the Cuauhnahuac Regional Museum was opened and is located within the palace taking advantage of this traditional and beautiful colonial building through its 20 rooms. The museum offers visitor services such as individual or group guided tours, as well as sells books and gifts. The palace is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. Closed on Monday.

Salto de San Anton
The Salto de San Antón, 3 kilometers from the center of Cuernavaca, is a waterfall approximately 40 meters in height. The site has lush vegetation and paths for visitors to walk along in order to enjoy nature. Many types of ornamental plants, flowers, trees and cactus can be seen here.


Teopanzolco Pyramids

Teopanzolco in Nahuatl means "The place of the old temple.". It is an important Tlahuica ceremonial center located in Cuernavaca. It is composed of the two temples dedicated to the different deities: Quetzalcoatl, God of Wisdom, Tlaloc, the Rain God and Huitzilopochtli, God of War

 

Robert Brady Museum
This famous museum was the home of Robert Brady and now houses a stunning art collection which includes works by Frida Kahlo and other prominent Mexican artists. The museum has an extensive mask collection from around the world. Visitants enjoy this museum, built in a section of the old Archbishop House built in the 16th century, part of the complex Franciscan convent. Open to the public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Group reservations can be made at other times. Modest entrance fee. Address: Calle Netzahualcoyotl # 4.
                                                                                    
Botanic Gardens
This Museum of Traditional Medicine and Herbolarium is dedicated to the preservation of and study of plants native to the State of Morelos and Mexico in general. The museum offers well-presented displays of regional plants and flora with considerable emphasis on medicinal, nutritional, decorative and traditional properties and usages. It is located on Calle Matamoros #14, Acapatzingo. Open daily from 9 a.m .to 5 p.m. Free entrance.

Getting around in Cuernavaca

Mexico has a convenient and inexpensive public transportation system. Within the city, students regularly take safe radio taxis or the public bus system known as "rutas". For attractions outside of Cuernavaca public inter-city coaches and minibuses provide excellent service described in guidebooks.

Public transportation is so inexpensive and reliable you do not need an expensive rental car. If you wish to rent a car, you can use your foreign driver's license.
