Study Abroad with UHV
Welcome to
the home page for Study Abroad programs available at The
University of Houston-Victoria. The vital importance of Study
Abroad in the preparation of students and citizens who are
able to compete in our globally interdependent society is
emphasized so often, by so many, that it has become a cliché.
The most important reality outcome of Study Abroad is that it
changes participants lives and perspectives in a very positive
way. Increasingly, almost all international studies experts
agree that the earlier we can offer such Study Abroad
experiences to our undergraduates, the better they serve as a
foundation for global competencies and perspectives leading to
mature choices about careers, professions and further
educational preparation.
In the
greater Houston metropolitan area, one out of five residents
was born outside of the United States. Seventy percent of
business and therefore employment in our area is dependent on
foreign trade. The Houston ship channel now ships the largest
international tonnage of all U.S. ports, and the port of
Victoria’s international trade and businesses are growing
robustly. Over 60% of the population in Texas will be
non-Anglo by 2010, and the list of motivations for becoming
internationally competent continues to grow. Certainly, at
UHV one focus of these activities is in part determined by the
large Hispanic population in the Coastal Bend region, and the
opportunity which that presents to maintain and enhance
diversity at UHV.
From the
perspective of the
Provosts Advisory Committee on International Education,
a major challenge will certainly be to design and opt for
participation in international programs that provide
opportunities which take into consideration the unique
characteristics of our community as well as our students,
staff and faculty. We hope that you will find via the
programs provided here that we are meeting that challenge.
