Minutes - August 2007

Student Senate Meeting Minutes

August 15, 2007

 

I.                   Call to Order: Called to order at 5:40pm  

 

II.                Roll Call:     

Members present:  Delores White, Rick Navarro, Kelli Gill, Marcus Taylor, Star Arnold, Sheri L. Sanderson (CC) and Minnie Urbano

Members absent:  Juan Diego Martinez, Farouk El-Abbassi and Shelley Ressman

III.             Approval of Minutes: Rick motioned to approve, Star seconded, all were in favor, motion to approve minutes passed.

 

IV.              Committees:

A.      Fundraising: No Report

B.     PR: No Report

C.     Special Events: No Report

D.    UHV Committees:

                                                              i.      Employee of the month: Rick voted in absence of Marcus

                                                            ii.      Safety and Risk Management: No Report

                                                          iii.      Student Fees Advisory Committee: No Report

                                                          iv.      Financial Aid Scholarship: No Report

                                                            v.      Faculty Senate: No Report

                                                          vi.      WEB: No Report

 

V.                 Advisor’s Report:  There are currently 693 members in UHV Connect, surpassing the original goal of 200 members.  September 17 is Constitution Day.  UHV Connect will hold an essay and multi-media contest with a $500 scholarship to the winner in each category.  Minnie reported that Chari Norgard is excited about student organization participation on campus and wants an active student life on campus.   

 

VI.              Officer’s Report:

A.     President:  Delores stated that the Meet the Leaders Social will occur on Monday, Sept. 17.  She stated that participating organizations would have the ability to decorate their own tables.  Delores wants to invite the Athletics department and introduce them.

B.     Vice President:  Rick informed us that the women’s softball team will begin practicing and having games.

C.     Treasurer:  Minnie gave the report in Juan Diego’s absence.  Senate currently has three accounts: Senate Account: $1662.79, Fundraising Account: $218.45 (receiving $4000 in Sept.) and Student Org. Account: $3914.87 (receiving $3900 in Sept., used to fund other student orgs. etc.). 

D.    Secretary:  Kelli had No Report

 

VII.           Old Business:

A.     Shirts:  Rick will order shirts (black with red/gold lettering) with new logo.  Kelli motioned to approve shirt design, Sheri seconded, all were in favor, motion carried.  

B.     Special Elections:  Rick motioned to approve special elections for open Senate positions, Kelli seconded, all were in favor, motion carried.

C.     Back to School Kits:  Passing them out August 20 and 21.  Minnie will take the SL campus theirs.

D.    Meet the Leaders Social:  Delores, Kelli, Star and Minnie will chair the committee.

E.     Fall Fundraising: 

                                                              i.      Pizza:  Delores mentioned possibility of pre-selling and delivering to offices Mondays 11am-1pm.

                                                            ii.      Wal-Mart Bake Sale:  Rick stated that they will match our profit.

                                                          iii.      Magical Evening of Giving:  Put on by the Victoria Mall, MEG is a non-profit community event on Nov. 18 where patrons that buy tickets come and privately shop during closed mall hours.  Tickets are $5 and 100% of profit is kept by the selling organizations.  Kelli motioned to approve participation in MEG, Rick seconded, all were in favor, motion carried.

                                                          iv.      Graduation Sale:  Delores mentioned selling extra tassels at the December commencement in Cinco Ranch.  Further consideration needed.    

 

VIII.        New Business:

A.     Meeting Schedule:  Delores raised idea of bi-monthly meetings and changing day to Wednesdays at noon, from Fridays at noon.  Rick stated that further consideration is needed.  Delores is sending out a poll and the majority wins.

B.     Hispanic Heritage Parade:  Rick motioned for participation in parade on Sept. 15, Marcus seconded, all were in favor, motion carried.

C.     Special Olympics:  Kelli expressed need for volunteers and male coaches for the upcoming Special Olympics games in Corpus Christi. 

D.    UHV Connect:  Sheri brought up the idea of having a site within UHV Connect for student organizations.  Sheri and Rick volunteered to head that project. 

 

IX.              Announcements:  Reminder regarding the UHV Press Conference on August 21, 2007 at 2pm to reveal new Athletics logo and team to public.  Delores stressed that everybody available should be there. 

 

X.                 Adjournment:  Rick motioned to adjourn, Star seconded, all were in favor, meeting adjourned at 7:00pm.
