Old Business
City Softball Team
Jody Gillit is
recruiting a softball team to play in the Victoria City Softball
League this summer. The team would also participate in the YMCA
Corporate Cup softball event. The team is open to employees of UHV and
their spouses. They are currently trying to find sponsors but if they
are not successful in finding a sponsor then each person wishing to
join the team will need to pay a $25.00 fee. T-shirts will be
approximately $12 per person.
She needs to know who
is interested by next Wednesday. The sign-up fees are due by June 5th.
Season starts on June 12. The team will play on Tuesday nights for
twelve weeks at the complex by the Community Center.
Team will represent
UHV and need people to come out and support the team even if they
don’t care to play. There are only four teams in the league right now,
but more are expected .
New Business
Corporate Cup
Laura Smith showed a
video of the 1995 kick-off rally for the Corporate Cup. She and Karen
Pantel are seeking participation and ideas to increase participation
in this year’s Corporate Cup (CC) events.
Karen Pantel informed
us of some new events and rules for this year’s event. The whole event
will be one week long as opposed to two weeks as in the past. The YMCA
is trying to put the fun back in the competition this year; to make it
less about competition and more about fitness and fun and
sportsmanship. Two new events were added to this year’s line-up.
Toss-ball is akin to volleyball but less ‘intense’ and less physically
demanding. They’ve also added a 3-legged race. The age limit was
raised this year from 16 to 18. Softball and volleyball will be one
day events instead of two day events. Also the CC will start the last
week end in September.
Team captains are also
currently being sought. The team captain will be responsible for
keeping your teammates informed and up-to-date on CC events and will
organize practices for your team. Captains will also attend captain
meetings periodically throughout the summer.
Laura reminded us that
student workers are also eligible to participate in CC events and
encouraged departments with student-workers to solicit their
participation.
She also stressed the
need for family and friends to come out and support the UHV teams.
The first forty (40)
people to sign up for participation in the CC will receive a free
3-month membership to the YMCA!!!
Study Abroad
Jan Wendt with Special
Projects told us of the recent approval of a for-credit (3 hours)
opportunity in collaboration with Universidad Internacional in
Cuernavaca, Mexico. This program would allow the student to
participate in a total emersion into the Mexican culture. The student
would live with a family and attend class at Universidad Internacional.
The cost is $1,675 for the program with college credit or $1403
without college credit. Airfare would be the responsibility of the
student. Financial aid is available; please talk to the financial aid
office.
Announcements
Laura Jud told Council
about events planned by the Relay for Life team for the upcoming year
to raise money for the American Cancer Society. Planned new events
include a garage sale, Bunko Night, and a silent auction. The tried
and true raffles and bake sales will of course continue. Contact
Linda Parr or any RFL team member for more information.
Adjourn
A motion was made by Laura Jud to adjourn the
meeting at 3:07 p.m. The second was given by Christy Esse. |
