LETTING EDUCATION ACHIEVE
DREAMS
Letting Education Achieve
Dreams (LEAD) is a comprehensive higher education awareness and
participation campaign, which UHV began in 1999. The LEAD mission is
to increase the educational attainment rate in our service region by
creating within students and communities a Pre-K–14/16 mindset and
by facilitating a seamless transition from high school to college or
technical school. Strategies for the LEAD program include creating
awareness of the value and accessibility of higher education through
presentations to community, workplace, and parent groups; sending
LEAD Ambassadors to area schools to talk with Pre-K–12th graders
about the importance of higher education; arranging visits to UHV
and community colleges for 4th, 7th, and 10th graders; and,
developing and supporting mentoring programs. his past year over
12,000 students and 500 adults participated in the LEAD program.
COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT
The Office of Community
Development, along with UHV’s other outreach units, focuses on
overcoming barriers to educational attainment, providing support to
communities for increasing educational attainment levels. Activities
specific to this unit include program evaluation services, support
for community educational collaborations, data reports, and grant
search services.
PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
The Office of Professional
Development provides non-college credit courses and learning events
that enable students, alumni and other residents to continue their
professional growth. This unit provides Continuing Education Units
(CEUs), CEU transcript maintenance, conference style training, and
customized training.
CENTER FOR PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT & TECHNOLOGY
The University of
Houston-Victoria’s Center for Professional Development and
Technology (CPDT) represents the collaborative efforts of the
University, the Victoria Independent School District, the Region III
Education Service Center, the community, and a partnership with 12
other teacher certification institutions in this area, to prepare
teachers for the classrooms of tomorrow. The Center provides
field-based learning experiences for students seeking to reach their
educational goals of becoming certified teachers. In addition to the
field-based learning experience, the Center also provides these
pre-service teachers, as well as currently certified teachers, with
training that assists in incorporating new technologies into their
teaching repertoire.
MINORITY MATHEMATICS &
SCIENCE EDUCATION COOPERATIVE
The Minority Mathematics
and Science Education Cooperative (MMSEC) project is a collaborative
effort of teacher professional development between the University of
Houston-Victoria, the Victoria Independent School District,
Bloomington Independent School District, Bloomington Elementary
School, Placedo Elementary School, Smith Elementary School, DeLeon
Elementary School, and Shields Elementary School. This program is
designed to strengthen the mathematics and science background of
teachers of underserved populations so that teacher content
knowledge, teaching practices, and instructional skills improve in
the areas of life science/earth science, physical science, and
mathematics. The program emphasizes the development of teachers in
both the affective and cognitive domains.
