Academic Council Minutes, February 7, 2007

 

I.  Guest

 

--Ms. Stacey Severovich shared with the council a PowerPoint presentation titled “Success Model for Recruiting Students”.   In her presentation she discussed 5 topics beginning with the Student’s Decision Making Process and ending with How to Convert More Accepted Students into Enrolled Students.  She also explained what roles a university plays in each step of the process.   The council decided to look at these steps more and see what UHV can do to improve their processes.

III.  General

 

 

--Mrs. Elois Kraatz distributed IntraSession II Spring 2007 Courses. 

 

--Dr. Jeffrey Di Leo would like to have a reported distributed bi-weekly that shows how many applicants; how many pending; and why they are pending.

Mrs. Chari Norgard is going to work on getting a standing report that she will bring to Academic Council meetings.

--Mrs. Elois Kraatz reported that the implementation of the student side of PeopleSoft is still on for March, 2007.  She is concerned that they are not getting enough training. 

 

 

--Provost LaBrecque reported Sugar Land and Cinco Ranch are slightly higher in their enrollments.  The new building in Sugar Land is in the final stages of planning.  It will house faculty offices, Biology, Business and Nursing.  Construction is expected to begin in July 2007 and be completed in July 2008.  Dr. Joe Dahlstrom reported that a joint library is in the works which will be shared by the public, UHV and WCJC.

 

 

 

 

--Dr. Margaret Rice stated that the new name of the President’s Advisory Council (PAC) is now the President Regional Advisory Board.

 

--Dr. Margaret Rice also stated that Donetta Goodall, the Vice President of Academic Transfer and General & Development Education at Austin Community College would like to visit our campus.  Dr. Rice is going to try to schedule small groups to meet with her and maybe a larger group for lunch.

 

--Provost LaBrecque briefly spoke about the recommendations on Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty that the Ad Hoc Committee suggested.  Dr. LaBrecque and the council agreed that this would be the first reading and this would be discussed in more detail in the future.

 

IV.  Specific

 

 

--A student who requested to use two leveling courses as Core courses is denied.

 

--A graduate student who has completed 12 hours without meeting requirements for graduate school is being withdrawn from her Spring, 2007 course and given a refund.  Recommend she take a GRE prep course before retaking the GRE and reapplying.

 

--A student request to walk across the stage in Spring 2007  before completing degree requirements is denied.

 

 

--Due to time constraints the faculty development grants were not discussed.
