Academic Council Minutes, November 29, 2006

I.  Student Issue

--Student presented her case to the council.  The council recommended the student’s two semester suspension be reduced to one semester.  The student will be reinstated spring semester 2007. 

II. Specific Agenda

• Student Appeals

--Student appealed that a grade of “F” be replaced with a “W” as the instructor agreed before the final exam.  The council recommended that the grade be changed to a “W.”   

--Appeal for a change of grade in a graduate Education and Human Development course, based on the student’s view the grade received was unfair was denied. 

--Denied a student request to remove a two-year suspension to allow the student to graduate December 2006. 

• Faculty Development Grant Requests and Reports

--When last year’s conference report is submitted, Dr. Nora Hutto will be awarded $1,300.00 to present at 20^th Annual International Conference on School Effectiveness and Improvement, in Portoroz, Slovenija, in December.

--When last year’s conference report is submitted, Dr. June Lu will be awarded $1,300.00 for a research grant to analyze online auction businesses in China using a combined perspective of MIS and marketing. 

-- Dr. Harold Smith was awarded $175.00 for a research grant to purchase copies of manuscripts for a book he is co-authoring on twentieth-century Texas women. 

--Dr. Siva Somasundaram was awarded $1,300.00 for a research grant to help to understand basics of dietary intervention during chemotherapy.

--Accepted grant funded conference travel reports from Mr. Andrew Baerg, Dr. Robert Hawkins, and Dr. Hsin-Hui Lin.

--Due to time constraints, no reports on Data Collection, Instructional Technology/Online Issues and Updates, PeopleSoft Issues, nor Fort Bend Issues and Updates were discussed.
