Academic Council Minutes, October 18, 2006 

I.  Guest 

--Bev Hoerig presented an Adobe Breeze Demo for the council.  A brief discussion followed on the various uses of Adobe Breeze, preparation time, and number of participant at one time. 

II. Minutes

III. General Agenda 

·        Data Collection 

--Trudy Wortham announced the Coordinating Board Affordability Survey had been submitted and she would send copies to the council members. 

·        Instructional Technology/Online Issues and Updates 

No report 

·        PeopleSoft Issues 

--Trudy Wortham stated once we have converted to PeopleSoft that students would see a third digit on their transcript. PeopleSoft calculates the GPA to four digits, but it rounded and truncated to the third digit, whereas our current process is to truncate to two digits with no rounding.   

Mrs. Wortham also announced she is still checking on the implications of the admissions level versus financial level load. 

·        Fort Bend Issues and Updates 

--Dr. Margaret Rice announced the President’s Advisory Council meeting in March would be held in Sugar Land. 

--Trudy Wortham announced Cinco Ranch would host a Community College Advising Night in early December. 

--Provost LaBrecque stated she has attended various meetings dealing with the new UHSSL building and Master Plan.  

--Chari Norgard reported she had finished the draft of The Coordinating Board’s Institutional Report on Distance Education and copies were forthcoming for comments. 

She also announced she is working on the Title V Grant, Improve Mentor Training. 

--Dean Charles Bullock stated the start date for the Universidad International is August 1. 

--Dean John Stansell announced he and Sandy Hybner have a meeting scheduled with the Victoria Independent School District Superintendent to discuss “Grow Your Own,” teacher program. 

--Dean Jeffrey Di Leo reported he had attended a conference that addressed gaming as the virtual classrooms of the future. 

III. Specific Agenda 

·        Student Appeal 

--Appeal was put on hold until Registrar can check on SACS requirements.

·        Faculty Development Grant Requests and Reports 

--Dr. Robert Hawkins was awarded $686.00 for the American Society of Criminology, in Los Angeles, CA. 

--Dr. Jun-Yeon Lee was awarded $800.00 for the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences Annual Meeting, in Pittsburgh, PA. 

-When FY 05 conference report is submitted, Dr. Ronald Salazar will be awarded $1,000.00 for the International Academy of Business and Economics-2006 Annual Conference, in Las Vegas, NV. 

--When last year’s conference report is submitted, Dr. Ron Sardessai will be awarded $760.00 for the Third Postgraduate and Research Congress, in Cuernavaca, Mexico. 

--Dr. Ziad Swaidan was awarded $1,290.00 for research on “Gender and Consumer Ethics.” 

--Accepted a grant funded research report from Dr. Nagarajan Ramamoorthy. 

Note:  To be eligible for Faculty Development reimbursements, receipts and reports must be submitted within four weeks of travel.
