II.  General Agenda 

·        Data Collection

--Trudy Wortham is working with the IT Director at UH to improve the Online Course Lookup feature.   

·        Instructional Technology

--First training for Vista is now scheduled for November 10 for pilot group of three faculty.  With regard to grouping levels for sharing Vista files, Arts & Sciences and Education indicated a preference for groupings at the program level and Business, at the school level.   

--IT described a plan for upgrading and moving to UC 215 the ITV equipment currently in UW 120, which will revert to a classroom.  Computers will also be added to UC 215.  Other moves include switching the Computer Science Special Projects room (UC 208A) to a larger room (UC 202A).  Also, the computer classroom (UC 201) will be expanded from 30 to 36 stations for next fall.

III.  Specific Agenda

  • Faculty Development Conference Presentation and Research Requests/Reports

    --Approved a development grant for research ($200) to Dr. Donald Loffredo for a study titled “College Students and HIV/AIDS.” 

    --Approved a development grant for research ($1,000) to Dr. David Satava to determine if professionals believe the Sarbanes-Oxley Act of 2002 will be effective in improving the reliability and accuracy of public financial statements, pending receipt of outstanding report.

    --Accepted a grant-funded conference travel report from Dr. Jifu Wang.

·        Student Appeals 

--An appeal was approved for a prospective graduate student to be admitted as an undergraduate pending confirmation of the award of the bachelor’s degree in January. 

--An appeal for an exception to the TOEFL was approved on the basis of the student’s demonstrated English proficiency.

·        Other 

--The Council discussed adding a note to transcripts in the case of failure owing to academic dishonesty.  It was agreed that, given the permanent status of transcripts, such a note should be added only in flagrant cases, such as ones involving repeat offenses or conspiracies.  The Registrar’s office will bring back language that could be added to existing policy, as stated in the Student Handbook and Faculty Manual.
