Academic Council Minutes, May 10, 2004

 

The Academic Council met from 9:30 to 12:30 on Monday, May 10, 2004.  Attending were Chari Norgard, Joe Ferguson, Mary Natividad, Trudy Wortham, Richard Phillips, Sandy Venneman (for Paul Carlson), Joseph Ben-Ur (for Charles Bullock), and Dan Jaeckle.  Minutes follow. 

I.  Minutes 

--Council approved the minutes of the last meeting. 

II.  General 

  • Data Collection

--No discussion 

  • Instructional Technology/Online Issues and Updates

--Joe Ferguson reported four responses from his faculty ITV survey.  He will send a follow-up.  He also requested approval to send a faculty survey about hardware configurations to the faculty this summer, and the council agreed.

--Chari Norgard noted that the issue of an online student WebCT bulletin board has arisen again.  The council raised some issues.  Chari will talk to the Student Senate and get back to the council.  She raised another issue of a required online orientation for online students proposed by the FACT committee.  She will check with the online technicians, and then maybe do a faculty survey.  She will bring the issue back to the council. 

  • Other

-- Summer Library Hours.  The council approved the request of Dr. Joe Dahlstrom to close the Library on Friday afternoons this summer.

--The council agreed to put language in the catalog, student manual, letter to graduates, and commencement program regarding the fact that students earning hours in their last semester are not listed in the program.  The Provost will draft that language and bring it back to the council. 

II.  Specific 

--The council approved two appeals for TOEFL exemptions and one appeal to use GRE test scores more than two years old. 

  • Faculty Development Requests and Reports

--Approved a development grant for conference presentation ($1000) to Dr. Vera Adamchik to the 2004 European Association of Labor Economists Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, in September.

--Approved a publication award ($245) to Dr. Daniel Hallock for the article “Demographic and Attitudinal Correlates of Employee Satisfaction with an ESOP” for the British Journal of Management.

--Approved a development grant for conference presentation ($1,000) to Dr. Ron Sardessai to the 2004 New England Business Administration Association International Conference, in New Haven, CT, in May, pending evidence of paper acceptance.

--Accepted grant funded conference travel reports (2) from Dr. Jim Holm.

  • Student Appeal

--The council heard an appeal from a student of a sanction for academic dishonesty.  The appeal was denied.
