Academic Council Minutes, October 21, 2002

The agenda was reversed to accommodate a visit by Dr. Sandy Frieden, Executive Director of CampusNet, and Dr. Kurt Czupryn, Director of UHS at Cinco Ranch.

I.  Specific Agenda

  • Other Matters

--The Council discussed issues raised in a grant report about the functioning of the Human Subjects Committee.

II.  General Agenda

  • Technology

--Chari Norgard distributed a memo from John McKee on computing requirements in the Sugar Land student labs.

She also noted that both blind and deaf students are signing up for online courses.  Thus we will need to develop guidelines and means for reasonable accommodation.

--Joe Ferguson reviewed ITV resources and the Council discussed projected needs.  It appears some anticipated cuts in resources are not feasible at this point, especially given the need to extend classes to Cinco Ranch.

  • Data Collection

--Liz Branch noted that PeopleSoft wants to provide training for persons who will have leading roles in the implementation of the Student Information System.  This will cost money for trainers and time for participants.  For after the first of the year, sessions are being planned to go over the fit-gap analyses and attempt to develop a common approach to implementation.

  • Fort Bend

--Dr. Frieden and Dr. Czupryn discussed with the Council various plans and issues related to the delivery of instruction at Cinco Ranch.  Dr. Czupryn reviewed the demographics of the Cinco Ranch area, noting that they are very similar to those of Sugar Land, with relatively high levels of education and income. The functioning of ITV was one issue.  The old CLI unit will be eliminated once a new switch is installed.  It has not been very satisfactory. UH is installing a new ITV unit for its primary use.  UHD has installed two units.  UHV now has one unit.  There is a fourth unit that belongs to the center.  All of these four should be functional.  The website, or lack of one, was also discussed.  A functional website is in progress.  It was noted that some kind of local control is necessary if the website is to be kept up to date and accurate.
