Academic Council Minutes, June 9, 2003 

I.  General Agenda 

• Instructional Technology/Online Issues and Updates

--Joe Ferguson presented some students’ concern about using the last four digits of their social security numbers as a user ID.  Various alternatives were discussed.  He will return with a proposal.

--Chari Norgard raised an issue concerning instructor access to student evaluation of online courses prior to the end of the term. She will discuss the issue further with the ISS faculty advisory group.

--Imposing limits on printing in the computer labs, on campus and at Sugar Land, was discussed, along with the functioning of Barnes & Noble’s new on-site book service at Sugar Land. 

II.  Specific Agenda 

• Faculty Development Requests and Reports

--Approved the request of Dr. June Lu for a travel grant ($288) to present at the 7^th International Conference of the Decision Sciences, in Shanghai, China, in July. 

--Approved the request of Andria Young for a travel grant ($285) to present at the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board 19^th Annual Recruitment and Retention Conference, in Austin, TX, in July. 

--Approved the request of Dr. Chun-Sheng Yu for a travel grant ($500) to present at the 7^th International Conference of the Decision Sciences, in Shanghai, China, in July. 

--Accepted reports on grant-funded travel from Dr. Li Chao and Dr. Nora Hutto. 

• Other

--Language was approved for incorporating into the catalog policy on the retention of student records.   

--A proposal was approved to move the application deadline for international students back from two months to three, given the increased time now involved in students’ securing a visa.
