Academic Council Minutes, July 23, 2001

I. General Agenda

  • The council went over the Enrollment Analysis Report in detail to determine which data seemed most useful and should be retained or augmented.

  • Joe Ferguson reported a recent problem with ITV at Cinco Ranch, in that no assistance was available on site to work with transmission.

  • Chari Norgard reported the implementation of a student listserv that will be used to transmit timely information. Postings will be through designated individuals. Students will all be assigned e-mail addresses and will be advised to check their mail regularly. She also reported that faculty will be given ID numbers for WebCT accounts, since social security numbers are not appropriate for that use.

  • Problems were reported with the book order forms for Cinco Ranch.

II. Specific Items

  • Student Appeals

--The council will recommend to Administration and Finance that a student receive a full refund for a withdrawal occasioned by the cancellation of a course.

--Referred to the registrar an appeal to count two government courses accepted by WCJC.

--Granted the appeal of a student to be reinstated from suspension on condition that enrollment be limited to Professional Writing 3430 and one other course.

--Rejected the appeal of a student to be admitted with less than a 2.0 GPA, advising that the student repeat courses at a community college or other institution to raise the GPA.

  • Faculty Development and Grants/Reports

--Approved a request of Dr. Yong Glasure for a research grant ($1,680) to purchase an OECD data set to write an article titled "The Interest Rate Convergence Within the EU."

III. Other Items

  • Postponed 3 agenda items to next meeting (2 + 2, 3 Cs, and majors on diplomas).

IV. Announcements

  • University West Academic Conference Room 270 will be reserved for the Self Study Committee. It was recommended that dedicated drive be established for committee use.
  • Dr. Diane Prince announced that she was stepping down as dean and returning to the faculty full time, effective this fall.
