Academic Council Minutes, June 18, 2001
I. General Agenda
- Joe Ferguson reported on the clean-up at UH, following the flood,
and indicated that, with some exceptions, technology capabilities are
about back to normal. He said some desk top cameras will be
purchased and installed on a trial basis.
- Chari Norgard reported that an orientation for online courses is now
itself online and will be fully operational by fall. UHD shared
some of its online orientation package. It was noted that the
orientation needs to incorporate library use.
II. Specific Items
- --Denied student appeal for admission with 1.82 G.P.A.

- --Tabled appeal of student requesting credit for courses for which
he was not registered, pending determination of whether course work
was completed and grades assigned.
- Faculty Development and Grants/Reports
- --Approved a FY 02 request of Dr. Li Chao for a travel grant
($1,100) to present at the WebNet 2001 Conference, in Orlando, FL, in
October.

- --Approved early requests of Dr. Peggy Cloninger for travel grants
($1,100) to present at the 2001 Business and Economics Society
International Conference, in Paris, France, in July; and ($600) to
serve as a caucus leader at the 2001 Academy of Management National
meeting, in Washington, D.C., in August.
- --Approved a request of Dr. Estella De Los Santos for a travel grant
($255.50) to present at the Conference of the Advancement of
Mathematics Teaching, in San Antonio, TX, in July.
- --Approved early a request of Dr. Yong Glasure for a travel grant
($342.11) to present at the Western Economic Association International
Conference, in San Francisco, CA, in July.
- --Approved a request of Dr. Richard Gunasekera for a travel
grant ($1,100) to present at the American Institute for Cancer
Research, in Washington, D.C., in July.
- --Approved a request of Dr. June Lu and Dr. Chun-Sheng Yu for
research funds ($2,400) for a research project titled "Assessing
the Management of Equity in China: Revisiting After 13
Years."
- --Approved early a request of Dr. Massoud Metghalchi for a travel
grant ($1,100) to present at the 2001 Business and Economics Society
International Conference, in Paris, France, in July.
- --Approved a request of Dr. Barba Patton for a travel grant
($265.50) to present at the Conference for the Advancement of
Mathematics Teaching, in San Antonio, TX, in July.
- --Accepted reports on grant-funded travel from Dr. Mel Damodaran,
Dr. Luh Yu Ren, and Dr. Sandy Venneman.
- --Discussed lapses in the curricular approval process.
Registrar will develop a process sheet to help with tracking.
Provost will provide registrar with a description of the process, as
in the Faculty Manual.
