Black History Month
In February 2017, the University of Houston-Victoria will observe National Black History Month with on-campus exhibits and special community events. Along with Victoria College and the Victoria Black History Committee Inc., UHV annually co-sponsors a poster contest for area fifth-grade students and a Black History Month Reception.
Fifth-Grade Poster Contest
Posters made by more than a hundred Victoria fifth-graders will be available for viewing during the month of February in the UHV University Center, 3007 N. Ben Wilson Street, with a few to be displayed at the Victoria Public Library, 302 N. Main Street.
Black History Month Reception
UHV, VC and the Victoria Black History Committee Inc. host an annual reception honoring poster contest participants on the second Friday of every month. The winners of the contest receive scholarships and camp waivers. Winners, as well as honorable mentions, also receive goody bags from UHV and VC.
The 2016 winners were: Clayborne Janssen of DeLeon Elementary School, first place, receiving a $2,000 scholarship to UHV and a summer camp waiver from VC, Bennett Janssen of De Leon Elementary School, second place, receiving a $1,000 UHV scholarship and a VC summer camp waiver, and Seth Birmingham of Vickers Elementary School, third place, who received a $500 UHV scholarship and a VC summer camp waiver. Honorable Mention awards were given to Joshua Baldwin of Dudley Elementary, Lauren Berryhill of Schorlemmer Elementary, Mason Gisler of Mission Valley Elementary and Baylee Hathaway of Vickers Elementary
