Federal TEACH Grant
The Federal Teacher Education Assistance for College and Higher Education (TEACH) Grant program that provides up to $4000 per year to students who are enrolled in an eligible program required to begin a career in teaching and agree to teach in a high-need field, at a low-income elementary or secondary school for at least four years within eight years of completing the program for which the TEACH Grant was awarded. The award is prorated according to enrollment status. However, due to the acoss-the-board budget cuts known as the sequester on the Federal student financial aid programs, the maximum TEACH Grant awards disbursed prior to October 1, 2014 is $1,982.30 per term. Maximum TEACH Grant awards first disbursed on or after October 1, 2014 and before September 30, 2015 will be $1,854 per term.
The student must sign an agreement to service agreement each year. Students who fail to meet the terms of the agreement (complete four years of teaching in a low income school district in a high need field within eight years of graduation) will have his/her TEACH Grant become a Direct Unsubsidized Loan. The student must repay the TEACH funds, with interest accrued from the date of disbursement through the Direct Loan Servicing Center.
TEACH Grant eligible programs at UHV are: Bilingual/English as a Second Language, Foreign Language, Reading Specialist, Career and Technical Education, Computer Science, English as a Second Language, Mathematics, Science, and Special Education - Elementary and Secondary Levels. Students who are seeking a BSIS Early School Education (K-6) only will not be eligible for the grant.
Students must have at least a 3.25 GPA.
In order to satisfy you TEACH Grant service obligation by teaching in a high-need field listed in the Department's Nationwide List, that field must be on the list for the state in which you begin teaching at the time you begin teaching in that field. Each year a student is awarded a TEACH Grant, the student must complete TEACH Grant Initial/Subsequent Entrance Counseling. After the student completes his/her degree, a TEACH Grant Exit Counseling session must be completed.

A TEACH Grant will be converted to an unsubsidized Direct Loan if the student fails to complete his/her service obligation (teach for four years in a high-need, low income school within an eight year period). It is very important to learn the details of the TEACH Grant.
TEACH Grant Subsequent Counseling
Each student awarded an additional TEACH Grant will be required to go through TEACH Grant Subsequent Counseling before the additional grant award will be disbursed. The online counseling session is located at https://teach-ats.ed.gov/ats/studentHome.action.
TEACH Grant Exit Counseling
Each time a student withdraws from a TEACH-eligible program or graduate, the student must complete a TEACH Grant Exit Counseling session. The online counseling session is located at http://www.nslds.ed.gov/nslds_SA/.
