MSN/MBA Dual Degree Program Requirements

Requirements for Graduate Admission

Applicants to this program will be required to meet admissions standards sufficient to establish their likelihood of success in both graduate nursing and graduate business courses. International students must have a minimum score of 89 on the TOEFL. Admission requirements include:

1. Apply for graduate admission through NursingCAS. (

2. Completion of Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree from an institution accredited by one of the six recognized regional accrediting associations as described in the ADMISSIONS section of the university catalog.

3. Evidence of current, unencumbered, valid licensure as a registered nurse in the State of Texas. This may be printed from the Board of Nursing website and uploaded into the NursingCAS application.

4. Official transcripts from each institution attended reflecting a grade point average of 3.0 or above on a 4.0 point scale on coursework completed, and the baccalaureate (or higher) degree conferred, sent directly from each institution to NursingCAS.

5. Applicants to the MSN program must provide a one page writing sample.  The personal statement should include information about your education and experience as a professional nurse to date, why you are interested in graduate education, what your career goals are for the next five (5) years, why you choose UHV for your graduate education and what contributions you plan to make to our mission at UHV School of Nursing and to advanced nursing practice. This document will be uploaded into the NursingCAS application.

6. An interview will be required as part of the admission process.

Video Interview - The video interview is a required portion of your application; therefore, we have provided you with clear instructions. In order to fulfill the interview requirement of your application, please follow this link: and proceed to our online video interview process. This interview will allow us to get to know you better as well as give us a better understanding of you as an applicant to the University of Houston-Victoria. Please be sure to follow all instructions carefully prior to beginning your interview.

Once you have started the video, do not leave the page. This is your one opportunity for the video interview. Read each question aloud before answering. You will have 60 seconds to read and respond to each question for a total of 4 minutes to complete the interview video. You must allow the video to save to 100% in order for your video to be available for review. If you have any questions regarding your online video, please go to and click on "Contact Us" or the Big Red "Need Help?” button at the bottom of each LikeLive internal webpage. (Please note that the University of Houston-Victoria Office of Admission cannot assist you with technical questions regarding the video process.)
7. Official score(s) of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) Admission criteria include a combined minimum score of 1000 on the Verbal and Quantitative sections and a minimum score of 3.0 on the written section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken prior to August 2011. A score of 153 on the Verbal section and a score of 144 on the Quantitative section of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) taken after August 2011.  Or, Official score(s) from the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) score of 450 or higher (verbal and quantitative sections combined), and an Analytic Writing score of 4 or above.  Scores may not be more than 5 years old. Test results will be uploaded into the NursingCAS application.

8.  Official score(s) of the Health Sciences Reasoning Test (HSRT).  A score of 18 or greater is required. The HSRT can be taken no more than two (2) times, and scores may not be more than 5 years old. Test results will be uploaded into the NursingCAS application.

9. Two letters of recommendation: one from a university faculty and one from an employer. Application will follow the NursingCAS References process. 

10. All clinical readiness requirements including criminal background check, drug screen, immunization requirements and CPR for Professional Rescuers met prior to enrollment as outlined in the student handbook

* MSN/MBA dual degree program students must complete NURS 6301 prior to enrolling in FINC 6352 or MGMT 6355.  Enrollment in all other course work listed requires fulfillment of published prerequisites. 

UHV Catalog

MSN/MBA dual degree program students are expected to:

1. Be familiar with the mission of this program and to comply with the expectations of them outlined in this catalog, new student orientation, and student handbook.

2. Maintain high standards of academic honesty and ethical behavior as outlined in course syllabi.

3. Ensure that degree plan requirements are understood and contact advisor promptly to resolve any questions regarding enrollment.

4. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 throughout the program.

5. Ensure contact information such as address and e-mail address is kept current in their MyUHV self service account.

6. Comply with registration deadlines, financial aid deadlines, and tuition and fees deadlines.

7. Apply for graduation by the published deadline for the semester in which they will complete degree requirements.

8. Visit the School of Nursing web page ( regularly for important updates and to obtain information on course textbooks. 

Transfer of Graduate Credit

Credit may be transferred only for graduate credit courses completed with a grade of A or B. The transfer student must complete 75% of the coursework required for a degree program at UHV unless transferring from a UH System institution.  In the latter case, the student must complete 50% at UHV.  It is the student's responsibility to provide course description and course syllabi for consideration.
