UHV is pleased to announce the School of Nursing Second Degree BSN program received formal approval from the Texas Board of Nursing on July 17, 2008.The next admission to this program will be Spring 2010.Deadline for application and all supporting documents for Second Degree BSN program is November 1, 2009.
The Second Degree bachelors program is a twelve-month intensive full-time program for people holding bachelors or masters degrees in other fields who want to become registered nurses (RNs). This program is designed to facilitate a career change for the more mature and experienced student .This program is offered on the Sugar Land and the Katy Campuses.To find out more about the Second Degree BSN program click Program Requirements or email nursing@uhv.edu for general information.

Program Description
The objective of the Second Degree BSN program is to produce graduates for professional nursing practice who can draw upon knowledge from the biological sciences, social sciences, humanities and nursing to critically analyze human responses to actual and potential health problems and provide appropriate nursing interventions. The Second Degree bachelors program is a twelve-month intensive full-time program for people holding bachelors or masters degrees in other fields who want to become registered nurses (RNs). This program is designed to facilitate a career change for the more mature and experienced student.
Program Goals
1. Synthesize knowledge from the humanities, biological, social and behavioral sciences to provide appropriate culturally sensitive nursing care to individuals, families and communities.
2. Demonstrate effective interpersonal communication, leadership skills, quality improvement, patient safety and collaboration with other professionals.
3. Assume accountability for client care outcomes related to disease prevention, health promotion, and evidence based nursing practice to restore health across the continuum of healthcare environments.
4. Utilize clinical reasoning and critical thinking skills to evaluate the outcomes of nursing care provided to clients throughout their life span.
5. Deliver quality patient care while utilizing knowledge and skills in information and patient care technology.
6. Serve as client advocate by providing health education and monitoring healthcare policies that influence the ability to promote access to cost-effective care.
7. Acknowledge the need for lifelong learning and create a foundation for advanced study.
8. Integrate professional values and ethical, moral and legal aspects of nursing into practice in a variety of settings.
Accreditation
The Second Degree BSN program is seeking full approval from the Texas Board of Nursing .The baccalaureate program is seeking accreditation as a new program from the Commission of Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Graduates of the Second Degree BSN program are eligible to apply to take the examination for licensure as registered nurses.
