Directions for Searching for Classes: "Browse Catalog"

Step 1: On the Class Search screen, you’ll need to choose UH-Victoria, the course term, and Browse Catalog. Then, choose Go.

Step 2: The Browse Catalog feature provides an alphabetical search tool for the class schedule.

Classes are organized by subject (Accounting or ACC, Foundations of Education or FED, History or HIS, etc.), so accounting courses appear first in the list (as in our example below).

The “A” is highlighted (the small red circle below) to show we are viewing subjects (and the courses available within those subjects) that start with the letter “A” (like ACC 3312 or AED 6304.

To choose other subjects, choose the letter of the subject.

Let’s consider an example. You’re interested in taking a management class, so you would choose M.

Step 3: Clicking on a letter reveals all of the courses offered, organized by subject.

So, since we’ve chosen “M,” we get course subjects like MAS (Mathematical Sciences), MGT (Management), MKT (Marketing), MSE (Middle School Education) along with the classes that are being offered within those subjects.

Let’s look at an example. Within the MGT or management subject, we can see that a number of classes are offered.

If you’re an undergraduate (and depending upon your major), you might be interested in MGT 3312: Legal Environment of Business; or, if you’re a graduate student, you might be interested in taking MGT 6351: MGT & Organizational Behavior (highlighted with the red circle below).

You have two options here to learn more about the course. You can click on the course description or name (which will provide some general details about the course).

You can also View Class Sections. You want to View Class Sections so that you can see more information about how many course sections are being offered, where they are being offered, and so on.

So, let’s click on View Class Sections (shown in the image above) for MGT 6351, and continue to Step 4

Step 4: When you choose View Class Sections, the course sections that are being offered will appear.

Depending upon what’s important to you, you’ll want to look at the day and time the course is offered, who the instructor is, what location the class is being offered, and/or the instruction mode.

There are a couple of things that you’ll want to look for in the display.

Let’s use our example to discuss some of the important features of the search results.
  1. Check to see how many pages are available (the red circle with the number 1 by it in the upper right corner of the image above). Sometimes, you’ll only have one page of results, but if more than one page of results is available, the Last will be bolded. You’ll need to click on Last to see the second page of your results.
  2. The section number (the red circle with the number 2 beside it) is important. Once you’ve decided on a section to take, you’ll want to write down this section number. In our example, the section number is 15216. You’ll need this section number to sign up for (or register) for classes.

By clicking on the course section, you can learn more information about the class, including the class availability (whether or not there are seats available and, if so, how many) and any prerequisites for the course. (To learn about prerequisites for a course, visit the course catalog at http://www.uhv.edu/catalog/course_descriptions.asp.)

When you’re finished viewing the screen, choose Return to Results. Continue to choose course section numbers until you’ve found the section of the course that meets your needs. Once you’ve chosen the course that you want to take, write down the section number. You’ll need this section number when you sign up (or register) for classes.

Step 5: When you’re finished looking at the sections available for one class, choose Start a New Search to begin searching for the next class that you want to take.

Then, return to step one to start your new search.

From here, you can read directions for Searching the Course Schedule or you can Browse the Catalog.
