Director of Marketing & Communications
Paula Cobler is the director of marketing & communications for the University of Houston-Victoria. She oversees and coordinates UHV’s overall image, which includes advertising, promotions and public relations. She also provides leadership to a nine-member marketing and communications team. She supervising all press releases and marketing copy; creating presentations; and assisting the media and faculty, staff and students to increase communication about UHV. Paula has a bachelor’s degree in technical journalism from Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colo. During the 2005-2006 school year, she took classes at Harvard University in Cambridge, Mass., as a Nieman affiliate. She was an award-winning newspaper reporter and editor in Colorado and Texas for nine years before becoming president and general manager of The Mirror, the student newspaper at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley, Colo. Prior to moving to Victoria in 2007, she was an adjunct journalism professor at UNC and CSU. Paula and her husband, Chris, have two children, Nicole and Paul.
Jeremy Shapiro is the communications manager in the Marketing & Communications Department. He manages, develops and executes the university’s communication programs. His duties include writing and editing news releases, coordinating communication projects and initiating media coverage of the university. He earned bachelor’s degrees in journalism and political science from the University of Iowa and a master’s degree in sports management from Wichita State University. Jeremy had worked for a decade as a newspaper reporter and editor. Prior to his arrival at UHV, he was the assistant sports editor for The Emporia Gazette in Emporia, Kan. Jeremy and his wife, Lisa, moved to Victoria in April 2012. They have one son, Logan.
Creative Services Manager
Melody Vecera is the creative services manager in the Marketing & Communications Department. Her duties include coordinating and designing marketing pieces that effectively promote the university and its departments. Melody earned her bachelor’s degree from UHV in applied arts and sciences with a concentration in communications. She also studied visual communication design at Austin Community College. Prior to joining UHV’s Marketing & Communications Department, Melody worked as a graphic artist for Graphix Unlimited and a production manager for the Victoria Business Magazine. She and her husband, John, reside in Victoria County, and have two children.
Shane Blucher is a graphic designer in the Marketing & Communications Department. He is responsible for crafting graphic designs for a widespread assortment of projects for internal and external audiences. He earned a degree of applied arts and sciences at The Art Institute of Dallas. A native of Burlington, Iowa, Blucher landed in Amarillo after graduation, where he founded Stoney Hollow Design. He also is a seasoned photographer whose client list includes West Texas A&M University, Amarillo Economic Development Corp. and Tascosa Hot Sauce. He and his wife, Jill, moved to Victoria in June 2014. They have three children, Drew, Gracie and Jeff.
George Rodriguez is a graphic designer in the Marketing & Communications Department. He earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in graphic design from the International Academy of Design & Technology-San Antonio. He previously designed ads, Web banners, postcards and posters at Sharkmatic Advertising in San Antonio. He also worked at the Port Lavaca Wave newspaper, where he was part of redesigning the newspaper; as well as at Sport Zone magazine in San Antonio; the Waco Tribune; and CC Creations in College Station. He won three ADDY Awards for logo design from the Waco Chapter of the American Advertising Federation. Rodriguez is originally from Port Lavaca and moved back to the area in November 2012.
Akalina Sanchez is a graphic designer in the Marketing & Communications Department. She creates and designs a wide variety of marketing graphics, promotional pieces and advertisements communicating university messages. She earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a concentration in graphic design and a minor in communication from the University of Texas-Pan American. Prior to moving to Victoria in October 2014, she worked for the UTPA Athletic Department designing, printing, putting together Web pages and taking photos. She previously worked as the associate manager of design and production for Global Copies in Mission.
Lauren Hightower-Emerson is a communications specialist in the Marketing & Communications Department. She writes news releases and marketing copy, edits content and works with the media. She earned her bachelor’s degree in journalism from Baylor University. She moved to Victoria in 2007 after graduation. She previously worked for the Victoria Advocate as a copy editor and community conversation editor. She is a Texas native and married a Port Lavaca native in 2011.
Lonnie Holcombe is the Web developer in the Marketing & Communications Department. Lonnie studied computer science at Victoria College and went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in religion from Wayland Baptist University in San Antonio. Prior to joining UHV’s Marketing & Communications team, Lonnie worked for two years as the lead Web developer at D.E. Webworks. In addition to his position at UHV, Lonnie maintains his own business in Web development.
Della Rampley is the administrative secretary in the Marketing & Communications Department. She handles the day-to-day administrative tasks that keep the office running, answers phones and emails, assists in marketing and research projects, and supports Paula Cobler and other members of the marketing & communications team in their assigned duties. Della has worked for UHV for over four years and has lived and worked in the Victoria area for more than 20 years.
Tara Dotson is a student worker in the UHV Marketing & Communications Department. She handles a number of departmental projects including preparing newspaper clippings and marketing reports. A Katy native, Tara is a sophomore majoring in marketing. Her career aspiration is to work in the advertising industry. Her favorite aspects of attending UHV are the small class sizes and ability to get academic help when needed.
