ONLINE SKILLS ASSESSMENT

To determine if you are ready for an online course, review this self evaluation checklist.

If you answer to yes to the majority of questions in each skill area, you should be ready to take an online course. If you answered no to the majority of questions in a skill area, you may want to work on that set of skills prior to taking an online course.

 


Computer Skills
  • I am comfortable using a computer.

  • If provided directions, I can download and install software.
  • I can use a word processing program.
  • I know how to print documents.
  • I know how to save my word processing files as a different file type (e.g. .rtf .html .txt)
  • If I have a problem with a computer, I know where to get help or I can fix it myself.
  • My computer meets the minimum technical requirements needed for WebCT.
Internet Skills
  • I have Internet access.
  • I know how to use a web browser to navigate web sites.
  • I know how to open a web page when given the URL address.
  • I am able to print pages found on the Internet, including pages that use frames.
  • I am able to use a search engine (Yahoo, MSN, Google, etc.) to find information on the Internet.
  • I know how to use email.
  • I have sent an attachment with email.
  • I can open or download an email attachment.
  • I am familiar with how online chats work.
  • I am familiar with how online bulletin boards (discussion boards) work.
Research Skills
  • I am familiar with electronic library databases.
  • I know how to research to find information I need.
  • I am able to use a search engine (Yahoo, MSN, Google, etc.) to find information on the Internet.
Communication/Time Management Skills
  • I like to work independently.
  • I am comfortable asking for clarification and will continue to ask until I have the information I need.
  • I am comfortable with written communication.
  • I am self disciplined enough to keep up with course readings, assignments, and activities without the need for prompting from my instructor.
