Web Policies &
Procedures
The University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) increasingly
relies on its web site as a marketing and
informational tool.
The purpose of these standards is to:
-
Facilitate the
development of UHV web pages for liaisons, student
representatives and faculty.
-
Ensure the consistency
and quality of web pages that represent the
university, its schools, departments, and programs.
-
Ensure UHV web sites
comply with standards and guidelines for State of
Texas web sites.
These web standards are
based upon a review of:
Roles &
Responsibilities
-
Webmaster: The
UHV webmaster will a) oversee design and production of
the UHV web servers; b) provide thorough guidance and
training to liaisons, student representatives and
faculty as needed; c) maintain the UHV web servers; d)
adhere to all UHV and State of Texas web standards and
guidelines; and e) will review and monitor all
developed pages for the UHV website.
-
President’s Cabinet:
Each President’s Cabinet member will be the point of
contact in collecting information about the UHV
website. Once contacted with the request, the cabinet
member will appoint a liaison to work with the
webmaster for that particular project.
-
Liaison: The
liaison and webmaster will work together to ensure all
content for the web is completed with UHV and state
guidelines in mind. Through their liaison, departments
and offices will provide the content for web pages.
This may be done by submitting content to the
webmaster electronically or by the liaison posting
content directly to the server in the designated area.
-
Student
Organizations: Officially constituted student
organizations will be allocated space on a UHV server
and may request access to create approved web pages
that will represent their activities. The Office of
Student Recruitment and Relations will approve each
organizations student representative and notify the
webmaster. The student representative and webmaster
will then work together to ensure all content for the
web is completed with these and the state guidelines.
Content may be submitted electronically to the
webmaster or by the student representative posting
content directly to the server.
-
Faculty: Faculty
may request space on the UHV academic server and can
post web pages that contain university related content
(i.e.) online course materials, vita, syllabi, etc.
Faculty pages on individual school sites should not
have more than contact information and degrees earned.
Basic
Design Guidelines
-
Design Strategy:
The webmaster will maintain an overall design for the
UHV web site, and ensure UHV web standards and Texas
State guidelines are in compliance. The webmaster will
regularly run programs to evaluate all pages on the
web. This will include checking hyperlinks, graphics,
navigation, etc. on the UHV web site. Liaisons,
student representatives and/or faculty will be
informed about any errors on their pages and will be
asked to make necessary corrections.
-
Accessibility:
All UHV web pages must be consistent with other
university policies and standards and checked through
an accessibility standards program to determine if web
pages are accessible to those with disabilities. One
program that could be used is Bobby

-
Copyright: Web
page developers must ensure that material published on
their web pages conforms to all relevant copyright
laws. Unless the liaison, student representative
and/or faculty created the materials for the web then
there are copyright concerns. Please contact the
Distance Education Librarian or the webmaster for
further clarification.
-
Updating: All web
pages should be updated at the beginning of each
semester. Periodically, the webmaster will review the
entire site for outdated links, outdated pages, ADA
compliance, etc.
-
Readiness: The
liaison, student representative or faculty member will
not post web pages before they are complete and ready
for use. Pages should not contain “under construction”
labels, buttons in the navigation bar that do not link
or nonexistent internal or external links. The
webmaster will periodically verify all links.
-
Integrity: The
webmaster will maintain the integrity of the web site
and take corrective action when published pages are
not in accord with the standards contained in this
document.
-
Exceptions:
Exceptions to one or more web site standards may be
made only with written approval from the webmaster. To
gain approval, the liaison, student representative or
faculty must provide a short description of the
exception, noting the standard(s) s/he wishes to be
exempted from, along with a rationale for the
exemption. The webmaster will provide a written
response to each request within 1-2 weeks. Because the
library serves both UHV and the Victoria College, it
is exempt from these design standards.
