The University of
Houston-Victoria provides computer and
telecommunication support for faculty and students
primarily through the Information Technology
Department. This department is responsible for
providing those resources in the most cost effective
manner to meet the goals of the institution, the
University of Houston System (UHS), and the state of
Texas. Its responsibilities include operating and
maintaining academic and administrative server
systems, microcomputers, campus network operations,
telecommunications services, and interactive video
operations. IT also operates and supervises six
microcomputer labs and two special projects rooms
supporting academic computing. The department provides
a variety of training courses for faculty and staff on
software and technology topics. It also develops and
maintains application programs and data access
applications in support of administrative functions.
IT assists in developing and implementing information
resource strategic policies and procedures.
The primary challenge for UHV Information Technology
centers around serving a geographically diverse
student base and an active faculty and keeping up with
evolving technologies. This challenge involves making
the technological leaps required to maintain and
expand support of distance education in the
transmission of instruction through
Internet-accessible online courses and interactive
video technology. UHV must also maintain those
services in a reliable and effective manner. UHV,
along with the other components of the UHS, is in the
process of implementing online courses and programs,
along with interactive courses, in support of specific
geographical areas of its service region so as to
increase the availability of instruction to remote
audiences. An additional challenge is to provide UHV
faculty and staff the support and technology resources
needed to encourage innovative uses in instructional
activities, research and development, and
institutional information distribution.
