Technologies for Teaching

The effective use of technology can help to make the learning experience more engaging for the students, while expanding the arsenal of tools that the instructor can choose from to deliver his/her message. While there are new gadgets and gizmos popping up everyday, not all will have a place in teaching. With the guidance of faculty advisors, ISS will research and test technologies to help determine their potential as a teaching tool or to save time and effort.

We will highlight some of the hardware and software tools that are currently in use here on campus, as well as explore some technology ideas that you can incorporate into your teaching.

Using Impatica to Enhance your PowerPoint Presentations

Impatica for PowerPoint is a software tool that allows you to create a presentation in PowerPoint and then compress and convert it to a format (Java applet) that can be streamed over the internet. It retains all of the text, graphics, animations, and narration that you have added to your presentation to make it more engaging and interesting for students to view and learn.

We currently have a campus license for this software. Download and install the Impatica setup file below.

After installation, launch the Impatica program. You must enter our registration information in order to use the software. Contact Beverley Hoerig for registration codes or to set up a training session.

Electronic Grading - What are your Options?

Thinking about tossing out that ol' red pen?
Wondering what choices you might have to grade papers electronically?

For more details, view the document Electronic Grading - What are your Options? (PDF)

Microsoft Word – highlight a portion of text and insert comments using the reviewing toolbar

WordPerfect – highlight a portion of text and insert comments

Adobe Acrobat – insert handwritten comments with a pen tool or add text notes

PenOffice – add handwritten comments to Word documents with this software and a pen tool

Markin – highlight text and insert typed comments or add comments using customized buttons for frequently repeated comments

Grade and scan – print out and grade papers manually, scan graded documents and return in one of several formats

All of these options are “student-friendly” and do not require them to purchase any software. They may only need to download the free Adobe Reader plug-in.
