Elements of Instructional Design

Effective teaching begins with effective planning. Instructional design represents the foundation on which to build the most effective learning environment for students. Good design principles consider the goals and learning objectives of the course, the needs of each student, the course materials and resources, and the technology available to deliver the course.

Identify the design elements that make the most sense for your course and incorporate them into your development process.

Developing Online Courses

Chances are when you decide to put your course online, your instructional materials are stored in several formats. You might have books, paper handouts, pictures, and movies that have been used as supporting material to lectures in your face-to-face classroom. Or, you might already have some electronic resources, such as word processing documents and lists of web sites that relate to your course. So, where do you start?

The following resource guide will help you plan, organize, and create your online course.

Designing for Active Learning

Teaching online involves making a transition from the traditional classroom to a virtual course environment. How do you translate the unique benefits of face-to-face interaction into effective online activities? Motivating students to take an active role in their learning is key, and designing activities that promote student interactions helps to build a sense of community among course participants.

Discover different strategies for active learning using online course tools for content, communication, and assessment.
