Vice President Updates

FY2006 Budget Updates   Our overall proposed budget is near $30 million which is up $3 million since 2004. Two major factors that caused the large jump in budget are 1) additional $497,000 in Higher Education Assistance Fund (HEAF); 2) faculty/staff raises which total $923,000.

UHV's #1 priority in this year's budget is to provide for an overall 4.0%  merit raise and 1.5% reclassifications and market adjustments for faculty and staff providing an overall increase of 5.5%.  The FY06 budget also enables UHV to sustain a healthy student to faculty ratio at nearly 16 to 1 and continue to be a state leader in the percentage of credit hours taught by tenure and tenure track faculty at approximately 80.  We have added new positions, filled most of our vacancies, hired one new dean and, came to agreement with a highly qualified individual to lead our new nursing effort, as well as provide impetus in related program development and sponsored research.

UHV has earmarked additional funds for the upcoming capital campaign and added funds for additional  technology, set aside funds for the stimulation of research, and increased library acquisitions budgets.

The proposed FY06 budget will enable marketing of UHV's newly accredited MBA program both nationally and internationally.  The proposed budget will also allow much needed repairs and renovations, such as the replacement of $175,000 chiller.  The proposed budget also includes UHV taking over the administrative oversight at UHS Cinco Ranch in Fort Bend County.

Basic Computer Tips

If you're leaving your desk for a while and want to make sure someone won't accidentally close an important document you have open, you can lock your PC without closing any of your programs.  Just hold the Windows Key and tap L.  You can unlock it again by putting in your password.

Do you have a million programs open and need to get to an icon on your desktop?  Hold the Windows key and tap D.  Everything open will be minimized.  Hit it again to bring your programs back up. If items on your start menu are difficult to find, you can alphabetize them by right clicking on the start menu and choosing Sort by name.

Lastly, Google Earth gets the official stamp of approval as the Cool Program of the year.  Check it out for yourself: http://earth.google.com
