News from Business Services

Bursar's Office

  • Final figures for Fall 2003 show only 32 students of all those who originally registered were disenrolled for nonpayment of tuition & fees  for the Fall 2003 semester.

  • Beginning Spring 2004, health insurance coverage for all international students will be mandatory.  Insurance will also be available to domestic students who may apply directly with the insurance carrier for coverage, provided the students meet the minimum course load requirements.  Details are being still being worked out between the Bursar's Office, Admissions, Student Relations and the Insurance Carrier.  However, it is believed that cost for insurance will be included in  the tuition and fee bills.  International students who already carry health insurance meeting the minimum coverage requirements can apply for a waiver at the beginning of each semester.  Questions concerning this coverage can be directed to Elois Kraatz, Admissions (will be handling waivers);  Yolanda Gonzalez, Student Relations (applications) or Lois Lemke in the Bursar's Office (international billing).

Purchasing Tidbits

  • PeopleSoft Online Requisitions -- A decision has been made to temporarily postpone the online purchase requisition feature in PeopleSoft until implementation of version 8.4 in Spring 2004.  UH Main and Clear Lake have been using this feature for some time.  The Downtown campus is also waiting for version 8.4 before implementation.

  • Look for  improvements  in the purchase requisition form within soon.

  • PeopleSoft HUB reports are distributed to all departments on a monthly basis.  You should review these monthly reports to see  your departments HUB efforts which are expressed as a percentage of total expenditures.  Generally, about 15 to 20% of each department's expenditures should be HUBS.   HUBs include women-owned businesses and minority-owned businesses.   If you need help in identifying HUBs for the purchase of services or goods or if you have questions concerning the  monthly HUB report, call Lydia Huber at x823

The State Texas Building and Procurement Commission has entered into new state contracts with UPS and FedEx for ground shipping of small parcels. After reviewing contracts, Business Services has decided to continue to ship using UPS.  Send UPS ground shipments to the Mail Room with the address label and cost center info so that Mail Services can process a barcoded trackable label for shipping. The advantages of this new contract:

  • The costs are somewhat cheaper than FedEx Ground on certain common weight shipments

  • No Fuel Surcharges

  • No Weekly Service Charges

  • No Residential Package or Delivery Services Charge

Remember, for all your Bulk Mail needs, go to the Postage Folder on the "P" Drive, then open the Bulk Mail folder which contains procedures and forms available for departments use.
