Vice President Updates

As promised in the last edition of the Administration and Finance newsletter, the Administration and Finance Division is changing the newsletter to include more articles of interest to everyone.  If you would like to comment on an article, click on the "Comments" link found at the bottom of each page and e-mail your comments to us.  Please be sure to include the title of the article.  Let us know what you like or what you do not feel is beneficial to you.

From time-to-time we wonder if we should continue with this newsletter.  Is it informative and helpful?  Your opinion is appreciated.

Help Desk Tips

  • For security reasons, your computer will lock you out of your account if you use the wrong login information 4 consecutive times. In this event, you will get the message that you are unable to login because your account has been locked. However, your account will automatically be unlocked after 30 minutes. You should be able to log in normally after that period.

  • Many printing problems can be solved by restarting (power cycling) the printer. Feel free to give this a try on printers that are connected to your computer next time the printer is not responding normally. Always contact the Help Desk for network printer problems.

  • If you are not able to log in to your computer, check to see that “UHV” is selected in the Domain field in the log-in screen. If you do not see the Domain field, clicking on the “Options” button will display it.

  • If the curser on your wireless mouse begins to move on its own, the “ghost” is probably another wireless mouse too close to yours. Wireless mice will sometimes interfere with other wireless mice if they are too close together. There should be a reset button on your base (transmitter). Place your mouse close to the base and press the reset button on the base, then press the button on the bottom of the mouse to get rid of the “ghost.”

  • During the hours between 8am to 5pm, Monday - Friday, there is always someone at the Help Desk phone (x399), so remember to first try calling extension x399 with computer problems.

Invest in a College Education

According to the Census Bureau data, college graduates earn over their lives an average of $1.3 million more than those with only a high school diploma.  For those with master’s degrees, the premium grows to $1.7 million.  (The San Diego Union-Tribune, Peter Svensson, Jan. 4, 2005.)

Often Forgotten Employee Wellness Benefit

One of the benefits from our relationship with Victoria College is that the VC Sports Center is available to UHV faculty, staff and spouses at no charge during regular posted hours of operation.

To use the Sports Center employees must provide an ID card with the current semester validation sticker to the attendant on duty and sign in and out when using the facilities.  Users are required to wear appropriate athletic workout attire while participating in any activity area including the Fitness Room, Gymnasium, and Aerobic Room.  See the Kinesiology Department at the Victoria College website for more information or just walk on over and visit.
