News from the Bursar's Office

  • Beginning Summer 2005, book loans will increase from $25 per credit hour to $ 35  per credit hour  up to a maximum of 18 hours.  This was done at the request of students who said that $75 for books for a three hour course was just not enough in many cases.  Now the maximum book loan amount will be $630.

  • Beginning Fall 2005, returned check charges will increase from $20 to $30.

Safety and Risk Management SORM Report

The State Office of Risk Management (SORM) audit report has been received.   We are happy to report that there were several noteworthy observations made:

  1. "Worker' Compensation Claims ...remain commendably low." Worker's Compensation Claim management at UHV is well directed and managed."

  2. "The University has taken a proactive step by providing informational awareness presentations to employees concerning office ergonomics to prevent minor issues from developing into serious problems."

  3. "The Safety and Risk Management Department has established a very good working relationship with local emergency response organizations."

  4. "The University continues to improve and develop its' Business Continuity Plans (BCP) with input from many departmental sources..."

The State noted areas where improvements were needed to maintain the effectiveness of the campus program.  Those findings include
  • Emergency Evacuation/Fire Drills need to be conducted periodically during occupied work shifts.  A regular drill schedule needs to be established.
  • Emergency Exit Obstructions (tables) in the Alcorn Auditorium need to be cleared.
  • Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters need to be installed in all electrical outlets within 6 feet of a water source.
  • Chemical lists need to be updated. State guidelines and Federal OSHA require the preparation and annual updating of lists detailing the chemicals present in each facility, and signed by the person responsible for compiling the data.
Contact our  Safety and Risk Manager, Genaro Cortez for a copy of the report.
