Arizona State University Study: College Better Investment than Stock Market An Arizona State University study recently found that investing in a college degree has a better return than playing the stock market. Also, it results in higher wages for everyone in a community. According to the study by the W. P. Carey School of Business, a person with a four-year college education earns $1 million more over his/her lifetime than a person with a high school education. The rate of return on a bachelor’s degree is 12% per year compared to the long-run average annual return on stocks of 7%. The net rate of return is over all costs, including individual contributions and state appropriations, as well as income sacrificed while earning that degree. Despite the high return on degrees, only 25% of the adult population in the United States has at least a bachelor’s degree. In contrast, more than 50% of Americans invest in the stock market, according to the American Shareholders Association. The study also shows that investing in college degrees has a spillover in social returns. In addition to the financial benefits to the individual who earns a bachelor’s degree, the average wage, including workers who do not possess a college degree or a high school diploma, is higher in communities with a substantial proportion of the workforce highly educated. We appreciate the numerous favorable comments about the water feature in the esplanade entry to the campus off of Ben Wilson. We hope you enjoy this welcome addition to our property, as this is the last addition or change we are planning in landscape design until at least next spring. We appreciate your cooperation with maintenance while they are working to complete the change out of the lamps and ballasts in the West building. The changing of these lamps should help to offset some of the high electrical bills we are receiving. This activity is 31% complete. We will soon begin the requisitioning process for occupancy sensors which will extinguish lamps in classrooms and offices when not occupied. We will also be installing a new chiller for the West Building. These projects should also help in our electrical increases. Anticipated cost of electricity this next fiscal year is expected to increase by another 35% – 55%. In coordination with administration, we are examining numerous other options and calculations to save on utility expenditures.
