Vice President Updates

The University is engaged in two studies at the President's request.  The first study is a Utilities Efficiency study to find ways to save energy and ultimately save money.  It is anticipated that electricity will increase as much as 40-50% this coming year.  As you may have noticed, we have begun changing out light bulbs from T-12 to T-8s and installing occupancy sensors.  The Provost and Deans have met and others will be asked for suggestions such as the Faculty and Staff Councils.  Michael Ruland has been asked to lead the study for UHV.  Here are some inquiries Dr. Hudson made that are currently being reviewed.

  • How much would we save if we closed all staff offices on Friday afternoon or if we closed all buildings on Friday afternoon in the summer session but resumed in the Fall?

  • How much money would we save if we raised the temperature at noon on Thursdays to 78 degrees in the summer and 66 degrees in the winter or if we raised the temperatures on Saturdays to 80 degrees and lowered back to 76 degrees on Monday?

The second study UHV is engaged in is an Efficiency/Cost study.  As Administration and Finance looks into efficiencies, others will be asked to join in the process.  Some of you may recall that the University did this several years ago and some good ideas were put into action:

  • Forms, Student Catalogs, Student Schedules, etc., were placed on-line for easier access and availability

  • Eliminate mail pick up by departments by having mail delivered to offices daily by a mail clerk.

  • Employee reimbursement check delivery to the home address.

Basic Computer Tips

Excel

1. Instead of clicking and dragging to select multiple cells, try this:

Use the shift key to select several cells at once.
Example: While in Excel, click in cell A1, then holding the shift down. Click in cell F5. All of the cells are selected.

Also, use the ctrl key to select several non-adjacent cells.
Example:
Click in cell A1. Now hold the ctrl key down and click in cell F5. You can see that two cells are now active (selected).

2. Have you ever wanted to perform a carriage return and remain in the same cell?  A normal carriage return will take you to the next cell. However, holding the Alt key while hitting the Enter key will allow you to perform a carriage return and remain in the cell.

3. If you find yourself toggling back and forth from one Excel file to the other, try this.

Open both of the files, then go to Window from the command menu and select arrange, then select one of the methods of viewing the two files.
