Do you want to know why Grandma did not
receive her Christmas card this year?
Here are some suggestions why:
If you send out cards and letters quite

the U.S. Post Office, be hand
sorted. Post Office uses an Optical Character Reader (OCR) to sort
mail. The OCR process about 36,000 pieces of mail per hour.
The OCR prints a Post net Bar Code on the envelope, then sends it through
a high speed bar code reader. The envelope is directed to the state
then the city, then a mail carrier route, and possibly even the correct
building or office name as specified on the envelope. If the machine
cannot read your address, it spits out the envelope to hand sort. The hand
sort process will only produce about 600 units per hour. Maybe this
clarifies why it may take one day or one week for mail to cross the
nation.

News
and info from the world of Purchasing
Beginning January 2001, a new law will
be in effect that certain items will be considered first choice products
and should be purchased as recycled items. These recycled products
include: re-fined oils and lubricants; recycled-content toilet paper,
toilet seat covers and paper towels; recycled-content printing, computer,
copier paper and business envelopes.
As this is a new law, there are still
some things we need to learn about this program, so bear with us while we
learn. Also a reminder that Janie will be out of the office until January
9, 2001 on a much needed vacation.
American
