Degrees and Certification Offered
The Curriculum & Instruction Department offers a number of master's degree programs and several certifications. Some certifications are associated with masters' degrees, however others can be earned without a master's degree or admission to the graduate school program. Those who choose to obtain a Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction can specialize in Educational Technology, Elementary Education, Reading, or Secondary Education. Masters' Degree Concentrations
The Educational Technology program provides theory and applications integrating current technology with the curricula of contemporary classrooms.
Elementary Education teachers seeking masters' degrees may choose a degree plan that includes courses covering a wide range of topics in early school education, which will enhance the skills of those teaching in self-contained classrooms. No certification is associated with this degree plan.
Elementary Education teachers may concentrate their degree plan on effective teaching methods for mathematics in Early Childhood through Grade 6 or Grades 4 - 8 and includes all of the classes required to prepare for Master Math Teacher Certification.
Open doors of opportunity by teaching English to speakers of other languages.
The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction with a concentration in English as a Second Language/Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages will help you develop a solid academic foundation in second language theory and pedagogy in teaching English or any language as a second language in cross-cultural situations.
Two Reading Masters' degrees are offered. Those interested in improving their teaching skills in the reading field can specialize in Reading and prepare for Reading Specialist Certification at UHV. They can also obtain Masters' degrees in Reading without the courses necessary for Reading Specialist Certification. Secondary Education majors can also further their knowledge in their teaching discipline and in Education while earning Master of Education degrees.
This degree is available for those seeking any of the following
- Increased competence in teaching at the secondary level
- Accreditation for teaching dual credit courses in high school programs
- Credentials for teaching at the community college level
Courses required for the Reading Specialist Certification will satisfy the requirements for the Reading Master's degree.
Preparation for the Master Reading Teacher Certification consists of five courses. The Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certificate can be obtained without completing a master's degree, however four of the five MRT courses are included in course work for the Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction, Reading Specialist degree program.
Preparation for the Master Mathematics Teacher Certification consists of six courses. The Master Math Teacher (MMT) Certificate can be obtained without completing a master's degree, however all six of the MMT courses are included in course work for the Master of Education in Curriculum & Instruction, Elementary Education degree program.
