Teacher Certification
The basic requirements for becoming a teacher in Texas include a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university, teacher training through an approved program, and successful completion of the appropriate teacher certification tests for the subject and grade level you wish to teach. Certification for post baccalaureate students is available in the same teaching areas and specialization fields accessible to undergraduate students. Course work usually consists of 36 hours of training in effective teaching. Those who hold bachelors degrees without teacher certification have two options for obtaining certification through the University of Houston-Victoria.
If a Texas public school district cannot locate an individual with the appropriate teaching certificate, they may hire a person with the minimum qualifications and apply for an emergency permit for that person. Those who are issued emergency permits must immediately begin work toward standard certification and meet annual requirements for permit renewal while they teach. School districts must apply for official deficiency plans for their new teachers and pay a $25 service charge for each plan.
Students who prefer not to teach while they obtain certification may apply for a certification plan through the School of Education & Human Development and pay a $25 service charge.
An internship is only for those post baccalaureate education students on a deficiency or certification plan that are teaching in a accredited school. They must qualify for the teacher education program before entering into an internship.
To serve an internship, students must contact the Director of Field Experience and enroll in the appropriate courses. An internship provides high quality professional development that is sustained, intensive, and classroom-focused in order to have a positive and lasting impact on classroom instruction before and while teaching. It also allows the candidate to function as a teacher for a specified period of time while providing supervision that consists of structured guidance and regular ongoing support so that the candidate can demonstrate satisfactory progress toward full certification as prescribed by the State.
