Special Education Certification (All level - EC-12)

Special Education continues to be a high-need area in Texas and throughout the United States. The generic special education endorsement may be added to any valid Texas elementary, secondary, all-level, special education, or vocational education certificate based on a bachelor's degree.

Course work can be taken while preparing for initial teacher certification, however the Special Education endorsement cannot be awarded until the individual has obtained their initial certification from the state.

A UHV student interested in having a certificate in Special Education may complete the EC-4 Generalist, 4-8 Generalist; a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts, or Bachelor of Business Administration with the required teacher certification classes, and take:

  • SPE 3321 Exceptional Children: An Introduction
  • SPE 3322 Exceptional Children Assessment and Programming
  • SPE 4323 Exceptional Children: Modification, Methods and Materials
  • SPE 4324 Exceptional Children: Behavior Management
  • SPE 4305 Practicum in Special Education

Note: SPE 4304 (Student Teaching: Exceptional Children) will replace ESE 4304 Early School OR MSE 4304 Middle School Student Teaching
