Admission Requirements
  • Passage of the THEA or TASP test
    • TASP no longer offered

  • Completion of 54 semester hours prior to enrollment in Professional Education courses.
  • GPA of 2.5 in 9 SCH of lower division English; 6 SCH must be in composition

The center’s mission is to foster an environment of excellence in the School of Education & Human Development, thereby producing professional educators of the highest caliber to fill the needs of Texas’ schools.

Services Provided by the Center
  • Encouraging all students to strive for excellence
  • Providing students with preparation in learning, test taking strategies, and reducing test anxiety
  • Working with students in scheduled group study sessions and individually
  • Providing guidance in selecting appropriate tests for chosen programs of study
  • Helping students schedule tests based on their own progress
  • Supplying information about test standards, formats, strategies, and competencies

Additional Services
  • Workshops held in the fall and spring semesters feature guest professors with expertise in each area of testing.  Structured study periods are led in an extended session.
  • The center maintains a listserv to keep students informed of test dates, registration deadlines, and dates and times of study sessions.
  • Sample tests are available in all content areas and Dr. Patton will analyze your results to determine areas where you may need additional study or guidance.

Victoria Online
Initial Certification for Educators (VOICE)
  • Students with bachelors’ degrees can satisfy their certification requirements in as little as one year with 18 hours of graduate course work that will apply toward master’s degrees.

VOICE Format
  • Six classes delivered totally online
  • School assigns mentor teacher
  • UHV assigns supervising teacher
  • Two semesters of supervised internship fulfilled by employment with accredited school district as teacher of record OR
  • Practicum Seminar and Practicum in Teaching with 12 weeks of full-time practice teaching in a local school
  • Students may begin spring, summer or fall semester

VOICE Requirements
  • Candidates must:
  • Hold bachelors’ degrees
  • Have 2.75 GPA in undergraduate work or last 60 hours
  • Maintain grade point averages of at least 2.75 while in the program
  • Pass the THEA/TASP test and the content area diagnostic tool for the chosen field before entering the program.
  • Those seeking Grade 8-12 certification must have 24 semester credit hours for the content area in which they wish to teach (12 of which must be upper division)

  • All 18 hours of VOICE classes will apply toward select masters’ degrees.

      based on their certification grade range.

Educational Aide Exemption
  • Program Purpose
    To encourage employees of public school districts in Texas to seek out and acquire certification as teachers by providing free tuition and reduced fees to program participants.

Who can apply?
  • Individuals who:
  • Are Texas residents;
  • Have applied for financial aid through the college to be attended, including filing the FAFSA or by qualifying based on Adjusted Gross Income;
  • Have demonstrated financial need;
  • Are currently employed by a school serving in some capacity;

  • Have worked as Educational Aides in Texas public school districts for one year during the five years preceding the term or semester for which the exemption is received or have been Substitute Teachers with 180 full days of service within the past five years;
  • Are enrolled in courses required for teacher certification at the institution of higher education granting the exemption;
  • and meet satisfactory academic progress requirements for their colleges or universities.

Access to Success
  • Access to Success is UHV’s scholarship program for educational aides and substitute teachers. Program standards are aligned with those of the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) Certified Educational Aide Exemption

How is Access Different?
  • Main differences between Access to Success and the state program
    • Access to Success participants are allowed a 20% higher adjusted annual gross income.
    • Access to Success may provide funds for additional educational expenses in addition to tuition reimbursement.
    • Access to Success funds are available only to UHV students for classes taken at UHV.

How are scholarships distributed?
  • Access to Success scholarship money is limited and recent budget cuts have affected its funding. Scholarships are currently awarded on a first-come, first-served basis as long as we have money to distribute.
