Professional Coaching Certificate
Professional coaches (sometimes referred to as “life coaches” or “executive coaches”) can make a meaningful contribution to the lives of others. Just as an athletic coach motivates teams and players to become better athletes, professional coaches consult with individuals and companies to identify and pursue strategies for professional and personal effectiveness.
The UHV School of Education, Health Professions, and Human Development is partnering with Emotional Intelligence Learning Systems to provide graduate-level training in the field of professional coaching. Within this emerging field, coaching preparation programs vary widely in content and rigor; the professional coaching classes offered by UHV are grounded in decades of academic research in fields such as positive (Rogerian) psychology, emotional intelligence and transformative learning.
Dedicated Faculty and Proven Results
The UHV Professional Coaching classes are designed for adults in education and other professions (such as business leaders and health professionals) who want to use a human development model for self-improvement and who wish to develop the coaching skills to improve interpersonal communication in a broad range of settings. The online, three-class sequence is aligned with the core competencies and code of ethics of the International Coach Federation. Students successfully completing the following graduate-level (online) courses will receive a Professional Coaching Certificate of Completion from UHV:
- AHED 6360 “Professional Coaching I: Theory and Practice”
- AHED 6361 “Professional Coaching II: The Coaching Relationship and Positive Change”
- AHED 6362 “Professional Coaching III: Strategies and Skills”
In conjunction with completing the UHV certificate, students will have the option to enroll in a fourth class, AHED 6110 “Professional Coaching: Best Practices,” to fulfill additional requirements necessary for pursuing certification as a professional coach through Emotional Intelligence Learning Systems and the International Coach Federation.

The field of adult education has a long history of seeking to understand and promote informal education and postsecondary learning outside of the classroom, making the Adult and Higher Education program a natural fit for these classes. These classes are not included as a programmatic requirement of the Master of Education in Adult and Higher Education (AHED) program or any other UHV graduate program; this course sequence runs parallel. Students currently enrolled in the AHED program may enroll in these classes but should not expect that these courses will substitute for classes on their approved degree plans. Students pursuing this course sequence who are not seeking a master's degree are admitted as temporary graduates (non-degree seeking) and may take up to 12 credit hours of graduate course work under this classification.
It may be possible to pursue both the Professional Coaching Certificate and a master's degree from UHV, but additional admissions requirements may apply. Those interested can contact their academic advisor or the Adult & Higher Education program coordinator Dr. Lou Lloyd-Zannini at 361-570-4309 or Lloyd-ZanniniL@uhv.edu.
