CHECKLIST FOR STUDENTS SEEKING A MASTER OF EDUCATION DEGREE

  1. Apply for admission to UHV in the Office of Admissions & Records (OAR). All transcripts should be sent to OAR.
  2. Go online to www.uhv.edu/catalog/ to read the catalog to determine program admission requirements.
  3. Apply for admission to the UHV Graduate program. Forms are available online and in OAR. Requirements for graduate admission are explained in the catalog under Graduate Admissions or you may contact OAR for further information. Students may have additional criteria specific to a particular program.
  4. Before you complete 12 graduate level hours, take the Graduate Record Exam (GRE). Counseling students can take the GRE or the Miller Analogies Test (MAT).
  5. After admission to graduate school, you will be assigned a faculty advisor. A degree plan and/or certification plan (if applicable) will be initiated once you are accepted. IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU CONTACT YOUR FACULTY ADVISOR TO DISCUSS YOUR DEGREE/CERTIFICATION PLAN. IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT YOU MEET WITH YOUR FACULTY ADVISOR TO OBTAIN THEIR SIGNATURE ON YOUR PLANS. If you are seeking additional certification, have a copy of your Teacher Service Work Records sent to the Teacher Education Records Office (TERO).
  6. After you have completed the appropriate number of hours (30 hrs for AED students; 24 hours for CED, C&I/SPE, and C&I students), apply for the Master Comprehensive Exam. Applications deadlines are published in the catalog and are posted on the Education bulletin board. Applications are available online at www.uhv.edu/edu/Forms/default.asp. Enrollment for the semester of the exam is required.
  7. If appropriate, apply to take the TExES. Contact TERO for registration information.
  8. Take the Master Comprehensive Exam.
  9. Apply for graduation during the first month of your last semester. Applications and other information are available from OAR or online at www.uhv.edu/oar/. Your degree will NOT be awarded or posted on your transcripts unless you apply for and are approved to graduate. You must apply for graduation even if you do not plan to participate in graduation ceremonies.
  10. Upon completion of your degree/certification plan and passage of all appropriate tests, apply for certification online at www.sbec.state.tx.us.
* ANY SUBSTITUTIONS FOR YOUR DEGREE PLAN AND/OR CERTIFICATION PLAN MUST BE IN WRITING ON A SUBSTITUTION FORM AND WITH THE SAME SIGNATURES THAT APPEAR ON THE OFFICIAL DEGREE/CERTIFICATION PLAN.

** In accordance with Article 2, Texas Civil Statues, the Commissioner of Education may suspend or revoke a teaching certificate, or refuse to issue a teaching certificate to a person who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor for a crime which directly relates to the duties and responsibilities of the teaching profession.

All potential certificate applicants with criminal felony or misdemeanor convictions should contact the Certification Officer immediately to seek clarification of their certification status.
