Concentration in Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)

(Offered Completely Online 39 credit hours)




Students are exposed to a wide variety of topics within the field of Special Education and are prepared to engage in activities related to informal assessment, functional behavior assessment, behavior intervention, special education law, programming and transition. Educators and professionals working with individuals with disabilities in schools, community service agencies and residential settings can now earn their Master’s in Special Education with a concentration in Autism Spectrum Disorders at UHV.

The Master’s of Education in Special Education classes are delivered completely online. The entire program could be completed over a two year period* This program is ideal for students who work full time, have family obligations and/or live in an area where access to higher education is not available. Online courses are designed so students can access and participate in their classes virtually any time of the day.

Those students who already have a Master’s Degree, or students who wish to only receive the certificate, can take the ASD course sequence by enrolling at UHV as nondegree seeking students.

The ASD course sequence includes the following courses:

  1. SPED 6331 Behavior Assessment and Adjustment of Exceptional Children and Youth (offered Summer)
  2. SPED 6336 Behavior Applications: Focus on Autism and Developmental Disabilities (offered Summer)
  3. SPED 6325 Applied Behavior Analysis (offered Fall) Students pursuing the ASD concentration should take SPED 6331 prior to enrolling in SPED 6325.
  4. SPED 6337 Teaching Strategies for Students with ASD (offered Fall)
  5. SPED 6339 Communication Strategies for Students with ASD (offered Spring)
