The School of Education & Human Development (SEHD) at the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) chose to offer preparation for Generalist Certification for both EC-4 and Grades 4-8. The Generalist Certificate allows our graduates the flexibility to work in self-contained classrooms or teach specific subjects within their grade range by adding certificates in those subjects.
Certified Generalists can obtain additional certificates in specific subject/content areas by examination. UHV also offers certification for all levels, EC-12, in Special Education and Gifted/Talented. Supplemental certification in English as a Second language is specific to the grade range (EC-4 or 4-8) chosen.
UHV students who wish to teach at the secondary level obtain their academic degrees through UHV's School of Business or School of Arts & Sciences and co-enroll with the School of Education to take their professional development courses. We offer secondary teacher certification in the areas of Business; Computer Science; History; Mathematics; Science; and English, language Arts, and Reading.
UHV offers a variety of options for Texas teacher certification including undergraduate, post-baccalaureate, and graduate programs with classes online and face-to-face in Victoria and at two Houston locations. You can choose the program that is best for you.
Those who wish to pursue undergraduate degrees can take their junior and senior level courses through UHV to complete bachelors' degrees and teacher certification at the same time.
Our post baccalaureate (PB) certification program allows those who have bachelors' degrees to take the necessary course work for certification without having to obtain another undergraduate degree. PB students may hold full-time paid teaching positions while completing their certification requirements or may choose to student teach in their last semester.
Victoria Online Initial Certification for Educators (VOICE) is a unique teacher certification program that allows our students to become certified online in as little as one year while earning graduate level credit toward masters' degrees. VOICE students have the options of completing internships while in the program or student teaching in their spring semesters.
As the name implies, SoEHD's Center for Academic Excellence is dedicated to helping our students excell. We have purchased sample TExES tests for all of the certification areas in which we prepare students. Our students have the advantage of taking the appropriate sample tests prior to their first TExES attempts. Their results are analyzed to determine the best methods of increasing their knowledge and improving their test scores.
Group and individual study sessions cover content, learning, test taking strategies, and reducing test anxiety. We have maintained a first year pass rate of over 90% for the last ten years with steady improvement since the opening of the Center two years ago.
