Teacher Certification

Students completing their Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies for Early School Education or for Middle School Education, may seek teacher certification in  those grade levels upon completion of the requirements of their degree.

Certification Requirements for

EARLY SCHOOL EDUCATION (EC-Grade 6 Generalist Certification) and
MIDDLE SCHOOL EDUCATION (Grades 4-8 Generalist Certification)
  1. Complete all requirements for the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies with a plan in interdisciplinary studies.
  2. Pass appropriate TExES exams.
  3. Apply for your teaching certificate to the State Board for Educator Certification (SBEC).

EC - Grade 6 Generalist Certificate (Degree-Seeking Students Only)
  1. Block I

    C&I 3323* Instructional Design
    IDS 3323* Child Development and its Application to Learning
      * C&I 3323 & IDS 3323 must be taken concurrently
    RDG 3352 Literacy Development in the Elementary School

  2. Pass the qualifying PPR TExES Exam with an 80% or higher to advance to the following blocks.
  3. Block II

    ESE 4312 Social/Emotional Development through the Fine Arts
    RDG 3320 Foundations of Reading Theories and Assessments
    RDG 4365 Components of Effective Literacy Instruction

  4. Block III

    ESE 4322 Science for the Elementary School
    ESE 4324 Teaching Elementary School Mathematics
    RDG 4362 Workshop Approach to Reading and Writing Instruction

  5. General Education Courses
    • C&I 4316 Effective Social Studies Instruction - can be taken with any block
    • FED 4310 Human Learning and its Application to Education
    • MAS 3318 Concepts in Math I - can be taken with any block
    • MAS 3320 Concepts in Math II - can be taken with any block
      • prerequisite: MAS 3318
  6. TExES EC-6 Generalist Exam
  7. Student Teaching and Professional Seminar (Admission by application to Director of Field Experience)

  8. University courses (may be taken without admission to the Teacher Education Program)
