The changing nature of higher education and the influx of adult learners into formal, informal, community, and institutional education programs has sparked the need for skills, insights and knowledge of the field of adult and higher education. The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Houston-Victoria is responding to that need by offering a new and exciting masters program that prepares students to work in formal and informal education environments outside of the K-12 structure.
People who might enroll in this program will be community college faculty, staff, counselors/advisors, and administrators seeking advancement or to build their repertoire for leadership that comes with having a masters degree. Also community educators such as those who teach in community settings, health education, corporate training and development environments, and religious organizations can gain the valuable set of skills needed to accommodate the needs of and help overcome the barriers of adult learners.
After completing the required core courses (15 credit hours), and the required research course (3 Credit Hours), students choose one of two areas of specialization: Higher Education (15 credit hours), or Adult Education (15 credit hours). Any time during the program, students are required to complete an Internship in AHE (3 Credit Hours). The completion of the program requires successfully passing a comprehensive exam that includes 3 questions - 2 core course questions and one specialty area course question. The student may be required to have an oral clarification of insufficient exam responses.
| Core: | 15 Credit Hours |
| Research Core: | 3 Credit Hours |
| Specialty Area: | 15 Credit Hours |
| Internship: | 3 Credit Hours |
| Comprehensive Exam: | Pass/Fail |
| Total: | 36 Credit Hours |
Note: The “Internship in AHE” may be substituted with another specialty area course by students who currently work in the field of adult and higher education by submitting a letter from their employer and a resume. Approval of the waiver is granted by the AHE Program Coordinator. The goal of the program is for students to develop the knowledge and skills needed to conduct informed practice in one of the areas of adult or higher education. This informed practice is dependent upon having a knowledge base of numerous theories, literature, and research strategies to address practical challenges in the field.
