Many options exist for teachers who would like to strengthen their teaching of literacy.  Teachers can obtain their Master’s Degree and/or prepare themselves for the Professional Reading Certificate obtained through the state of Texas.  UHV also offers the Master Reading Teacher certificate.  The choice is yours!

Master's Degree in Curriculum & Instruction (Literacy Studies – Reading Specialists Certification) and (Master Reading Teacher (MRT) Certification)

Additional Requirements for the Reading Specialist Certification

  1. Valid Texas teacher certificate.
  2. Master’s Degree.
  3. A minimum of two years of teaching experience in an accredited school.
  4. Admission to graduate study within the School of Education and Human Development must precede the completion of applicable coursework.
  5. The program for the certificate includes:
    1. Twelve semester hours of graduate work in reading including the following suggested areas: foundations of reading; diagnosis and correction of reading disabilities; and clinical or laboratory practicum in reading.
    2. A resource area of at least six semester hours, including multicultural concepts and linguistics.
  6. Pass the TExES #151.
