Interdisciplinary Studies

The faculty and staff in the School of Education and Human Development (SoEHD) at the University of Houston-Victoria (UHV) would like to welcome you to our undergraduate programs. Students seeking the Bachelor of Science Interdisciplinary Studies (BSIS) degree may choose between UHV’s Early Childhood-through-sixth (EC-6) program and the four-through-eight (4-8) program. Upon completion of the BSIS degree students may achieve one of the following teaching certificates from the State of Texas:

Upon completing either the EC-6 Generalist or the 4-8 Generalist and taking the required additional courses, a student may also achieve one of the following teacher certifications from the State of Texas:

Early Childhood Education EC-Grade 6 Generalist

The following requirements apply to all candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree for Early School Education:

1. Satisfy all university requirements for a bachelors degree as found in the section, UNIVERSITY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR EARLY SCHOOL EDUCATION, in the catalog.

2. Lower Division: 
    o A combined total of 7 semester hours in natural sciences (biology, chemistry, geology and/or physics; a combination is preferred), one of which must have a lab. 
    o 3 semester hours of mathematics as required by the university core requirements, selected from college algebra, finite, trigonometry, analytic geometry, or calculus 
    o 3 semester hours in fundamentals of speech. 
    o 18 semester hours in the academic concentrations and specializations including 12 hours of TECA (Texas Early Childhood Articulation) courses.

3. Lower or Upper Division: 
    o 3 semester hours of a computer proficiency course.

4. Upper Division: 
    o ENGL 3430, Professional Writing 
    o 12 semester hours of core distribution electives in the humanities and social sciences area. 
    o 27 semester hours in the academic concentrations and specializations. 
    o 24 hours of professional education including 9 semester hours of student teaching.

Middle School Education Grade 4 - Grade 8 Generalist

Degree Requirements

The following requirements apply to all candidates for the Bachelor of Science in Interdisciplinary Studies degree for Middle School Education:

  1. Satisfy all university requirements for a bachelor's degree as found in the section, UNIVERSITY DEGREE REQUIREMENTS FOR Middle SCHOOL EDUCATION, in the catalog.
  2. Lower Division:
    • A combined total of 7 semester hours in natural sciences (biology, chemistry, geology and/or physics; a combination is preferred), one of which must have a lab.
    • 6 semester hours of mathematics are required in addition to the university core requirements. MATH 1350 and MATH 1351 should be taken
    • 3 semester hours in fundamentals of speech.
    • 18 semester hours in the academic concentrations and specializations including 6 hours of TECA 1354 and EDUC 1301 courses.
       
  3. Lower or Upper Division:
    • 3 semester hours of a computer proficiency course.
       
  4. Upper Division:
    • ENGL 3430, Professional Writing
    • 12 semester hours of core distribution electives in the humanities and social sciences area.
    • 27 semester hours in the academic concentrations and specializations.
    • 24 hours of professional education including 9 semester hours of student teaching.

Special Education Teacher Certification

Undergraduate students interested in obtaining certification in Special Education must complete either the EC-6 Generalist Certification or the 4-8 Generalist Certification and take the following courses:

* SPED 4304 Student Teaching: Exceptional Children will replace ESED 4304 Early School Student Teaching or MSED 4304 Middle School Student Teaching

English as a Second Language (ESL) Certification

A student interested in having a supplemental certificate in English as a Second language may teach students at the same grade levels and in the same content area as their initial certification. Students should complete either the EC-6 Generalist Certification or the 4-8 Generalist Certification and take the following courses for ESL Certification:

  • ENGL 3310 Introduction to the Study of language
  • LANG 4310 language and Reading
  • CUIN 4310 Teaching Diverse Populations
  • CUIN 4320 Teaching English as a Second language
  • CUIN 4303 Student Teaching in an English as a Second language
    (Replaces ESED 4303 Early School or MSED 4303 Middle School Student Teaching)
