The Program
The changing nature of higher education and the influx of adult learners into formal, informal, community, and institutional education programs have sparked the need for skills, insights and knowledge of the field of adult and higher education. The School of Education and Human Development at the University of Houston-Victoria is responding to that need by offering a new and exciting masters program that prepares students to work in formal and informal education environments outside of the K-12 structure. UHV’s program in Adult and Higher Education would be unique among Texas institutions in that it would combine coursework in both adult education and higher education administration. This type of program would have broad appeal to students employed in a variety of fields. Who enrolls in this program? People who might enroll in this program will be higher education institutions and community college faculty, staff, counselors/advisors, and administrators seeking advancement or to build their repertoire for leadership that comes with having a master’s degree. Those seeking the adult education track will be community educators such as those who teach in community settings, health education, corporate training and development environments, and religious organizations. This program will give them the valuable set of skills needed to accommodate the needs of and help overcome the barriers of adult learners. Degree Requirements: After completing the required core courses (15 credit hours), and the required research course (3 Credit Hours), students choose one of three areas of specialization: Higher Education (15 credit hours), Adult Education (15 credit hours), and or a “Discipline” track (18 credit hours). The goal of the program is for students to develop the knowledge and skills needed to conduct informed practice in one of the areas of adult or higher education, and to prepare faculty interested in teaching a discipline within a community college. This informed practice is dependent upon having a knowledge base of numerous theories, literature, and research strategies to address practical challenges in the field.
