Policies and Procedures


The mission of the University of Houston-Victoria Career Services is to guide students and alumni in career planning, provide internships, and help link students with employers in their desired fields.

The Career Services Office is located on the first floor of University West, Room 133F. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. Phone number: 361-570-4843.
 


Student & Alumni Services

  • Career Fairs – The Arts & Sciences and Business Administration career fair is held in April. Education Job Fairs are held in March and November. UHV students or alumni are invited and encouraged to attend. There are no fees. Career Fair announcements are posted throughout the campus, list-serve, and the UHV website during the month of the fair.


  • Computerized Career Guidance (SIGI – System of Interactive Guidance and Information) – a program specially designed to meet the needs of anyone in search of career guidance. Current UHV students will be able to explore and identify values, interests, and skills important to career decision-making. The SIGI program service is free to UH-Victoria students, alumni, and UH-Victoria applicants for admissions, while a $40-fee is charged to the public. Appointments can be scheduled by calling 361-570-4146.


  • Web-based Services

    Employment E-mail notifications


    Web-based services enable students and alumni to post resumes, conduct job searches, link with volunteer career mentors, attend workshops, and receive email notifications on employment opportunities. Currently enrolled students and UHV alumni may use this service for one semester following graduation (including summer) at no charge. After the free semester, alumni must purchase a Plan II card ($35 per year) or Plan III card ($75 per year) for services. Students and alumni may access these services by logging onto www.career.uh.edu then selecting the student or alumni icon, and using their last name followed by the last five digits of their social security number.


  • Resource Study Guides: GRE, LSAT, MCAT—Resource study guides can help prepare students for admission into graduate school. Current students or applicants into a UHV Graduate Program may check out the guides by completing and signing a Career Services Library Form.

    Currently enrolled students may check out publications by completing and signing a Career Services Library Form.


  • Career Series Literature – Resume, cover letter writing, interviewing, career planning, job searching tips, and many informative publications are available outside the Career Services office.


  • Career Workshops – Workshops are offered, upon request, regarding the topics of career planning, resume and cover letter writing, job searches, and interviewing. Workshops are free for UHV enrolled students.


  • Placement File & Transcript – Placement forms are located in the Career Services Office. Placement files can be sent to employers only after a request form has been filed in the office. Copies of academic transcripts can be delivered from Office of Admissions and Records to the Career Services Office at no charge; Career Services will mail them to a prospective employer upon student’s/alumni written request.


  • Individual Career Counseling – Individual counseling on career-related issues is available. UHV students and alumni may contact the Career Services office to schedule an appointment. Students and alumni also have the option to email career-related questions to: garciar@uhv.edu.

 

Employer Services

  • Career Fairs – Career Services provides an opportunity for many local and statewide industries and representatives to visit or interview students and alumni for possible employment by participating in job/career fairs. There are no participant fees. Employers interested in receiving registration forms should contact the office by email at garciar@uhv.edu or call 361-570-4146.


  • Job Listings – The Career Services office can provide several options that enable employers to better meet their employment needs for an employer seeking to hire part-time or full-time employees, interns, new graduates, or experienced alumni.


    Option 1: JoBANK: Employers specify the preferred method for interested candidates to apply. It offers automatic email notification to candidates and on-line applications. There is a $20 posting fee for 30 days, with an extended 30 days at no extra cost. Billing is by mail. Employers may access by logging onto www.career.uh.edu
    Option 2: JobScan: This is a no-cost option for employers who prefer to forward job announcements to Career Services by fax or mail. It does not offer automatic email notification or on-line applications. Announcements may be faxed to 361-570-4136 or mailed to University of Houston-Victoria, Career Services Office, 3007 N. Ben Wilson, Victoria, Texas 77901. Employers may access by logging onto www.career.uh.edu
    Option 3: UH-Victoria Career Services: This is a no-cost option for employers that may prefer to place job announcements onto the UH-Victoria website. The employer may access by logging onto www.uhv.edu; search for Employment Center.


  • Resume Referral – Employers access student and alumni resumes for hiring purposes by specifying major, degree level, and graduation date. Resume searches on the website are $20 per 10 resumes received. Employers may access by logging onto www.career.uh.edu.


  • On-Campus Recruiting – The Career Services Office will assist employers in coordinating on-campus information sessions that may enhance their UHV student and alumni recruitment efforts.


  • Marketing – The Career Services Office maintains company literature so that UHV students are given an opportunity to learn more about the company.
