SEGUIN – The University of Houston-Victoria men’s and women’s golf teams made an impressive opening statement in their inaugural golf tournament Tuesday bringing home a pair of second-place finishes, while Whitley Patterson brought home the women’s individual title.
The UHV men were the only team to record two sub-par rounds at the Texas Lutheran John Bohmann Memorial, but were unable to hold off the host TLU Bulldogs to finish second, while the UHV women lost a fifth-player playoff to Mary Hardin-Baylor after tying for first at the TLU Lady Bulldog Classic.
“I couldn’t be any prouder of these two teams,” UHV head golf coach Brian Williams said. “I think we really got some people’s attention with our performance over the last two days. We showed them the Jaguars are for real.”
The UHV men grabbed a two-shot lead over TLU after Monday’s first round at Max Starcke Golf Course, but saw host TLU regained the lead in the afternoon second round. On Tuesday, TLU was too strong Tuesday shooting a 7-under 277 to outdistance itself from the rest of the field.
The Bulldogs finished with a 54-hole total of 846, while the Jaguars overcame a four-shot deficit to Mary Hardin-Baylor to capture second place with a final round 282 and a 54-hole total 858. UMHB finished third with an 864, while Schreiner University was fourth with an 882.
“We were the only team with two rounds under par,” Williamson said. “TLU went deep but it’s their house and they were nearly uncatchable today. But we picked up 10 shots on Mary Hardin-Baylor to finish second.”
Four of the five Jaguars finished in the Top 10 individually, with James Price tying for third with a 67-74-71-212. Jon Moore fired the best round of the day for the Jaguars with a 3-under 68 to finish sixth at 214.
Austin Griffin (74-74-70) and Travis Chrietzberg (70-75-73) tied for ninth at 218, and Cory Anderson (75-71-74-220) tied for 14th at 220.
Patterson dominated the field, that included NCAA Division 3 powerhouse Mary Hardin-Baylor as she strolled to a 10-shot victory in claiming the women’s title over McMurry’s Monica Harris (78-77-155).
After opening with a 3-over 74 on Monday, Patterson conquered the par-71 Golf Club of Seguin with an even-par 71 to finish at 145. Teammate Lyndie Smith posted a final round 76 to finish fifth with a 159.
Behind Patterson and Smith, Morgan DeSive shot an 82-81-163 to place 10th, Larissa Loredo had a 97-95-192, and Devon Dueser a 109-93-202.
“You couldn’t ask for a better job then what these girls did for their first time out,” Williamson said. “We haven’t had a lot of time to work on a lot of things and they came out and performed great.”
UHV began the day in third place and roared home with a final round 321 for a two-day 657 as they slid past first-round leaders McMurry and Southwestern. But the Jaguars were unable to get past Mary Hardin-Baylor as the Cru turned in an impressive 312 final round to share the lead with the Jaguars.
UHV then lost the fifth-player score playoff to finish as the runner up. McMurry and Trinity finished tied for fourth at 662.
