University of Houston-Victoria faculty member Jane Devick-Fry has a busy time ahead of her leading the 2010-11 UHV Faculty Senate.

“I am looking forward to a positive, productive year from the Senate as the university has moved into downward expansion,” said Devick-Fry, an associate professor in literacy studies for the School of Education & Human Development.

She also is serving on the UHV presidential search committee.

The New Jersey native moved to South Florida for her college education. She earned her doctorate in curriculum and instruction. Devick-Fry began teaching at UHV in the late 1990s and has been a mainstay on the School of Education & Human Development faculty. She said her work on the Faculty Senate helps promote shared governance with the administration to create and uphold academic policies and procedures.

“The Faculty Senate is an elected body that listens to the collective voice of faculty members and provides a forum for discussion about academic and curricular matters, and others associated with the institution,” Devick-Fry said.

Faculty member Cindy Schnebly, the 2009-10 Faculty Senate president, will continue to serve as past president.

Other members of the Senate are as follows:

Executive Committee

  • Ron Sardessai — vice president
  • Charlie Alcorn — secretary
  • Denise Neill — School of Nursing representative

Senators

  • Jere Hammer — School of Nursing
  • DeMonica Junious — School of Nursing
  • Vivian Nowazek — School of Nursing
  • Keith Akins — School of Arts & Sciences

  • Diane Prince — School of Education & Human Development
  • Amy Barnhill — School of Education & Human Development
  • Joseph Ben-Ur — School of Business Administration
  • Ziad Swaidan — School of Business Administration
  • Ron Salazar — School of Business Administration

“I am honored to lead the UHV Faculty Senate,” Devick-Fry said. “This is an innovative faculty that is one of the finest in the nation.”

Suzanne LaBrecque, provost and vice president for academic affairs, said the university needs good faculty leadership during this time of growth and transition.

“With significant enrollment increases at both the graduate and undergraduate levels and many new faculty, this semester marks an exciting time of change, growth and development for UHV,” she said. “I am looking forward to working with the Faculty Senate as the university moves to its next level of excellence.”
