UHV undergraduate takes over public relations duties for Student Senate

Josh Walker

University of Houston-Victoria student Josh Walker had only been a senator at large for the university’s Student Senate since May when he got the chance to become the organization’s public relations director.

The Victoria resident said he ran for the Student Senate because he wanted to get more involved at UHV. He sees his new position as an extension of that goal.

“I wanted to get involved at UHV because it’s an opportunity to meet people,” he said. “That’s difficult when you take many of your classes online. Becoming the director of public relations is just another way to get even more involved. The more I can do for the school, the better.”

Walker admits he’s a little nervous about his new position since he has no prior experience in public relations, but mainly he’s just excited.

“I’m learning as I go, but I know I’ll be attending all the events at UHV, taking pictures and keeping the Student Senate website updated,” he said. “In September, I’ll be attending a conference for college senators in Washington, D.C. My goal is to learn as much as I can about my new position and continue to help the first class of incoming freshmen.”

As a senator at large, Walker already has worked closely with many members of UHV’s FIRST 200 during freshman orientation sessions.

“It’s been really fun to meet the freshmen because they’re so excited to be here,” he said. “They really want to support our school spirit, and I think the new athletics programs, like the soccer and golf teams, will provide more events for them to attend.”

Walker, a psychology major, said he’s always been interested in the power of the mind, but when he graduates in the summer of 2011, he will continue to pursue an education as a physician’s assistant.

“Psychology is an important part of healthcare,” he said. “It’s vital to be able to connect with your patients, and that will make this degree really beneficial when I become a physician’s assistant.”

Walker also works as an anatomy tutor at Victoria College. He has taken 20 hours every semester since enrolling at UHV in 2009 and has been on the Dean’s List, he said.
