Not only will Marissa Cervantez be part of the University of Houston-Victoria’s first freshman class in the fall, she’ll also be part of the first women’s soccer team at the university.

“I’m going to be making history at UHV,” said Cervantez, a recent graduate of Temple High School in Temple.

She first heard about UHV from the soccer coach at her high school, where she was a forward on the varsity soccer team for four years. She visited UHV and liked the size of the campus.

“I just don’t like big colleges,” she said. “I thought UHV’s size was just right for me.”

Cervantez also was active on her school’s cross country team for four years and was on the Temple High School Robotics Team for a year and a half.

But soccer was her main interest. She was named to the All-District First Team twice and the All-District Second Team once. She also was honored as the Offensive Player of the Year for two years at her school and was named the Most Valuable Player her senior year.

Cervantez plans on taking nursing classes at UHV and would like to become a pediatric nurse.

“I just feel like I’ve been put on this earth to help people,” she said.
